Notre Dame Defeats Baseball in Extra Innings

Tying the game in the eighth inning, the Canisius baseball team could not complete the comeback, as Notre Dame walked off in the 11th inning on a balk Sunday afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind.

The Golden Griffins fell to 22-26 overall, and the Fighting Irish improved to an identical 22-26 record in 2019.

Junior Jacob Victor provided the Griffs' offense by way of a bases-loaded, two-run single in the eighth as part of a three-hit day, while Daniel Jung tallied three hits for the Irish.

Notre Dame took the early lead in the first, as Niko Kavadas doubled home Spencer Myers. Later, Jung made it 2-0 Irish in the third, driving in Zack Prajzner with a single.

The Griffs finally broke through and evened the score in the eighth, as Victor singled through the left side with the bases loaded, scoring seniors Joe Preziuso and Conner Morro.

After both teams went down scoreless in the ninth and tenth, Notre Dame got singles from Jung and David LaManna in the eleventh, putting two runners on with two gone. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, while the balk called on junior Jarod Burmaster brought Jung in for the second walk off of the series.

Throwing 7.1 innings, Cameron Brown started for ND and allowed the two Canisius runs on five hits, striking out seven. Joe Boyle earned the win, tossing 3.2 innings and punching out seven while walking two.

Freshman Andrew Fron started the game for Canisius, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out three in four innings. Senior Andrew Kneussle followed Fron, throwing five shutout innings and scattering two hits while fanning two Irish hitters. Burmaster gave up the winning run, surrendering two hits in his two frames on the mound to receive the loss.

HEAD COACH MATT MAZUREK'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Our pitchers were very good today - we did a good job of pounding the strike zone and keeping them off balance. Our defense was solid yet again as well to keep us in a position to win. Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong side with some tough luck. Victor again provided a solid day at the plate - we did a good job of getting guys on in front of him to give him the chance to bring them in, which he has been great at all year for us."
