Five Things to Know Before Men's Lacrosse Travels to Olean to Face MAAC Newcomer St. Bonaventure

1) Busy Stretch Continues Tuesday at Bonaventure
• The Canisius men's lacrosse team continues a busy stretch of games Tuesday as it heads south to face Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference newcomer St. Bonaventure for a 7 p.m. contest at the Marra Athletics Complex. The contest versus the Bonnies is part of a 15-day stretch that will see the Griffs play a total of five times in that span, including four contests away from home.

2) Long Time no See
• Tuesday's contest serves as the first meeting between Canisius and the new iteration of St. Bonaventure men's lacrosse, but it is not the first meeting between the two programs. The Golden Griffins and Bonnies met four times during the first four seasons of varsity intercollege lacrosse at Canisius before St. Bonaventure moved its program to the club level after the 1993 campaign. The teams split those four matchups, with the Bonnies taking the first two contests before the Griffs responded with victories in the final two matchups.

3) Student Versus Teacher
• Second-year head coach Mark Miyashita will face one of his mentors Tuesday as former Canisiushead coach and Golden Griffin Hall of Famer Randy Mearns is in first season at the helm of the upstart St. Bonaventure program. Miyashita played four seasons (2000-03) for Mearns at Canisius, finishing his career ranked among the program's career leaders in points (145), assists (74) and goals (71). The duo also worked together last summer, as Miyashita served as an assistant on Mearns' Team Canada coaching staff at the 2018 FIL World Championships in Israel, helping the squad claim the silver medal.

4) Check your Pockets
• Tuesday's contest will feature two of the top defensive players in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as St. Bonaventure's Nick Conklin (20) and Canisius junior Holden Garlent (19) rank 1-2 in the league in caused turnovers this season. Against conference competition, Conklin leads all players with 12 caused turnovers while Garlent is part of a two-way tie for eighth with six caused turnovers.

5) Getting Defensive
• The Canisius defense has been stellar so far in conference play as the Griffs have held their first three league opponents to a combined total of just 18 goals. Canisius, who has held all three MAAC opponents to single-digit goals, has also done a good job of limiting quality scoring chances against, as their league opponents have scored on just 16.4 percent of their shot attempts (18-of-110) in those contests.
