Sipowicz, Hunt Dominate In Baseball’s Two Wins At Quinnipiac

RECAP
Using stellar pitching from senior starters Andrew Sipowicz and Nolan Hunt, the Canisius baseball team clinched the series win over Quinnipiac with two victories in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at QU Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn. The first game saw the Golden Griffins pull away late for a 9-2 win, before holding off the Bobcats, 3-1, in the nightcap.

The Saturday sweep moved the Golden Griffins to 13-16 on the season and 7-1 in MAAC play, while the Bobcats shifted to 11-16 overall and fell to 6-2 in conference action.

GAME ONE
The Griffs got out in front early, plating two runs in the first inning. Redshirt-junior William Krull singled to score junior Jake Burlingame, and fellow junior Jacob Victor later crossed home when senior Mark McKenna, returning to the lineup from injury, was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Victor picked up an RBI in the third, hitting a single up the middle that scored redshirt-freshman Mike Steffan and made it 3-0 Canisius.

A dropped third strike with junior Andy Leader at the plate in the sixth would allow McKenna to score the Griffs' fourth run of the game.

After Sipowicz faced one batter over the minimum through six innings, Quinnipiac was able to muster some offense in the seventh off the right-hander. Colton Bender got the Bobcats their first run by singling in Kevin Huscher, and Anthony Cruz later brought in Andre Marrero on a sacrifice fly. That would be it for the Bobcats, as Canisius junior Kyle Warner relieved Sipowicz with two outs and struck out Liam Scafariello with the bases full. Warner would then go on to retire the next six batters he faced in the final two innings.

The Griffs added three more runs in the eighth and two in the ninth, as Leader drove in two runners on an eighth-inning single and later scored himself on a wild pitch. Burlingame followed that up with a two-run double in the ninth, the only Canisius extra-base hit in either game.

Earning the win, Sipowicz finished with eight strikeouts in 6.2 frames, allowing two runs (one earned) over four hits. Warner picked up his second save in as many weekends, fanning one Bobcat hitter over his 2.1 innings.

Quinnipiac starter Tyler Poulin suffered the loss in his six innings of work, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits. Christian Nicolosi and Matthew Draper both tossed 1.1 innings in relief, as Nicolosi allowed three runs and Draper allowed a pair of runs to score. Joe Preciado finished with one hit and one walk in his 0.1 innings on the hill.

Steffan was a catalyst for the Griffs, drawing four walks and scoring three of the nine Canisius runs while also picking up a hit. Burlingame and Leader both tallied two hits and two RBI in the win, and senior Joseph Preziuso scored a pair of runs. Leader also recorded two steals.

For Quinnipiac, Huscher collected half of their hits, including a double in the fourth.

GAME TWO
Just like the earlier game, the Griffs jumped out to take the lead in the first when junior Stephen Bennett singled home Victor.

Quinnipiac answered in the home half of the third, as Marrero hit a sacrifice fly to center that brought home Huscher and tied the ballgame.

The fifth served as the turning point of the game, as a throwing error by the Quinnipiac pitcher on a ball Krull hit into play allowed Leader to come across for the second Canisius run. Senior Conner Morro then grounded to first, driving in Burlingame for an insurance run.

The Bobcats would not manage to get another run off either Hunt or junior closer Will Frank, as the home team did not record a hit from the fourth inning on.

The southpaw Hunt ended his day with two strikeouts over six innings to secure his fourth victory of 2019, allowing the lone run on three hits and two walks. Frank closed out his fifth save of the season by punching out two Bobcat batters in his inning on the mound.

Chris Enns was handed the loss for Quinnipiac, allowing three runs (one earned) and four hits across four frames in the start. Blake DeCarr faced two batters but did not record an out, issuing one walk, while Andrew Workman tossed three scoreless innings in relief.

Victor recorded two hits in the win for Canisius, while both Burlingame and Leader stole a pair of bases. Huscher, Cruz and Bender all recorded one hit, as Huscher notched his second double of the day.

HEAD COACH MATT MAZUREK'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Sipowicz was at his best today. He finally got to throw in over 40-degree weather and he thrived. He got ahead and made pitches when he had to that allowed the defense to work behind him.

"Nolan put together another quality outing for us. He also was commanding the zone and letting his defense make plays.

"It was great to get two solid starts today - there was a lot of confidence given from the pitchers to the defense to the hitters today and it worked out for us.

"We played good baseball today."
