Quinnipiac Rallies, Defeats Baseball in Extras

RECAP
Despite three home runs from the middle of the order, the Canisius baseball team was unable to hold off Quinnipiac, 10-9, in a 10-inning loss Sunday afternoon at QU Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn.

The loss moved the Golden Griffins to 13-17 on the season and 7-2 in MAAC play, while the Bobcats shifted to 12-16 overall and improved to 7-2 in conference action.

The Griffs were led by senior Conner Morro's three hits that included a solo homer, along with three-run blasts from redshirt-junior William Krull and junior Jacob Victor. On the Quinnipiac side, Colton Bender busted out four hits and Ian Ostberg plated four RBI in the win.

Quinnipiac got on the board first, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom-half of the second when Anthony Cruz brought in Evan Vulgamore on a sacrifice fly. Dylan Lutz followed with a single that scored Andre Marrero to make it 2-0.

The Blue and Gold took their first lead of the game in the third off one pitch, as Krull launched a ball over the fence that drove in both junior Jake Burlingame and Victor.

Quinnipiac loudly answered back in the home-half of the third, as Ostberg hit a bases-clearing double to give the Bobcats a 5-3 advantage.

Victor regained the lead for Canisius in the fifth with one swing as well, belting a homer that scored Burlingame and fellow junior Andy Leader. Morro then took a ball deep in the next at-bat, extending the Griffs' lead to 7-5.

The Bobcats chipped away at the Griffs' lead in the bottom of the fifth, when Ostberg was plunked with the bases-loaded to score Bender.

Canisius added two insurance runs in the eighth when senior Joseph Preziuso doubled to score fellow senior Mark McKenna, and redshirt-freshman Mike Steffan doubled as well immediately after to plate Preziuso.

Quinnipiac's Kevin Huscher made it 9-7 in the bottom of the inning, driving in Lutz on a single.

After a Vulgamore home run cut the lead to one to start the ninth, the Bobcats tied the game following a Canisius fielding error with Lutz at the dish allowed Kasperzyk to score.

Quinnipiac sealed the comeback in the tenth when Bender followed Huscher's walk with a double down the right-field line, plating Huscher for the winning run.

Andrew Workman picked up the winning decision, allowing two hits through 2.1 scoreless innings. Arthur Correira went 4.2 innings in the start, where he allowed seven runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits while punching out five. Colin Donnelly allowed two runs on two hits in his three frames of work.

Being saddled with the loss, freshman David Yankowski was unable to record an out in two batters faced. Senior starter Andrew Kneussle finished his day with five runs on five hits in three innings, while sophomore Jeff DeStefano allowed one run in 1.1 frames and junior Jarod Burmaster gave up a run over 3.2 innings of relief. Junior Will Frank allowed two runs (one earned) in his one inning on the hill.

HEAD COACH MATT MAZUREK'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"We had numerous opportunities to turn today into a different outcome. We fought back in spots but lacked toughness in other spots that essentially cost us the game. It came down to who wanted it more today, and we came up short."
