Baseball Gets Sweep with Three-Win Day Over Saint Peter’s

RECAP
On a day that saw parts of three games played, the Canisius baseball team was able to pick up the series sweep with three wins over Saint Peter's on Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y. Finishing up Friday's halted game, the Golden Griffins took the series opener, 7-5, before battling to a 10-5 victory in the second game and a 6-3 win in the finale.

The wins improved the Golden Griffins to 19-18 overall and 12-3 in the MAAC, while the Peacocks fell to 2-31 in 2019 and 2-13 in conference play.

Leading the way for the Griffs was junior Jacob Victor, who hit for the cycle over the course of the three games. Seniors Joseph Preziuso and Conner Morro and redshirt-freshman Mike Steffan all notched four hits as well, while junior Will Frank pitched clean ninth innings in both the opener and the finale to tally two more saves in 2019.

GAME ONE
The Peacocks started the scoring in the top of the first when Peter Ferony tripled home Hunter Mason.

The Griffs responded in the second inning, as a passed ball on a Conner Morro walk allowed junior Stephen Bennett to tie the score. Steffan then ripped a single to center that plated fellow redshirt-freshman Cole Hollins and Morro. Senior Mark McKenna followed with a triple that brought Steffan in, and Victor drove in McKenna on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1 Canisius.

Saint Peter's closed the gap in the third, as Ferony singled with the bases loaded to score John Gavura and Edwin Feliciano. Jared Paladino later singled himself, plating Mason to pull the Peacocks within one run.

Steffan reopened the lead in the home-half of the frame when he tripled home Morro.

The sixth would see both teams tack on a run, as Chris Marquart flied out, sacrificing himself to score Jared Quintero. Canisius would get their run on a solo shot from Victor in the bottom of the inning, making it 7-5.

Two batters after the homer, the game was halted on Friday due to rain and was finished on Saturday before the start of the doubleheader.

The score would hold through the end on Saturday, as junior Jared Burmaster and Frank combined to shut the door over the final four innings.

Canisius freshman Andrew Fron got the start and lasted five innings, giving up five runs on nine hits while fanning seven Peacocks to earn the win. Burmaster then threw three no-hit innings before handing the ball off to Frank, who struck out two in his one inning and got the save.

Starter Joe Albunia went 5.1 innings for Saint Peter's, issuing seven runs on eight hits and five walks to be credited with the loss, while Aditya Chandel came in and tossed 2.2 inning of one-hit ball.

Offensively, Victor tallied three hits and two RBI, including a double and the homer, while Steffan had a single and a triple to drive in three RBI. The Peacocks had Gavura and Ferony both tally multiple hits, as Ferony completed the contest with three RBI.

GAME TWO
Saint Peter's once again fired the opening salvo, as Ferony singled home Mason in the first inning to take a brief lead.

Canisius answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning, starting off when Bennett singled home Hollins and freshman Dylan Vincent later doubled to plate Victor. Steffan then knocked in two more runs with a single and scored his own run off a wild pitch.

Nicholas Sciubba cut the lead to 5-2 in the second when he scored Jared Quintero with a groundout.

The Griffs opened the lead up further in the fifth, as Bennett doubled to score Victor and Morro singled home Bennett. Vincent then doubled as well to plate Morro and Steffan once again brought Vincent in with a single.

After a hour and 17-minute rain delay stopped play in the middle of the sixth, redshirt-sophomore Jake Woodrich would single to start the home half for his first collegiate hit, and he would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch.

The Peacocks did rally in the seventh, starting off with a Trent Koerner triple that scored Andrew Connor before Koerner came home on a wild pitch. Mason later hit into a double play that plated Anthony Ramos, but that would be it as the comeback was stopped by Canisius freshman David Yankowski.

Senior Nolan Hunt got his fifth victory of 2019 with a six-inning start that saw the southpaw allow two runs on three hits while punching out three batters. Sophomore Omar Ward faced five batters but did not record an out, while Yankowski walked one in his inning of work.

Ryan Wappuas lasted four innings for Saint Peter's, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits to get the losing decision. Ledwin Nunez followed by allowing two runs in his frame, while Bryan Guzman had one run score in his 0.2 innings and Jean Candelaria induced a flyout in his only batter faced.

Bennett, Vincent and Steffan all had multi-hit and multi-RBI performances for the Griffs, while Ferony and Mason each had two hits in the loss.

GAME THREE
Taking until the third to break a scoreless tie, junior Jake Burlingame singled to bring in Preziuso for the Griffs' first run. Preziuso then drove in a run during the home-half of the fourth, knocking out a single that scored Morro. Redshirt-junior William Krull then hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth, allowing Victor to tag up and score the third run of the game.

Canisius added to the lead in the sixth when Preziuso doubled down the left field line, bringing around Steffan from first. Burlingame later placed down a sacrifice bunt that Preziuso scored on to give Canisius a 5-0 advantage.

Ferony tripled for the second time in the series during the seventh, scoring Mason, while Paladino grounded out to bring Ferony in from third.

Saint Peter's cut the lead to 5-3 in the eighth when Scubba scored on a wild pitch, but the Griffs got the run back in the bottom of the frame off a Burlingame double that brought in Preziuso.

Senior Andrew Sipowicz threw his second-straight eight-inning start, getting the victory after striking out six and only surrendering three runs on five hits. Frank finished off the Peacocks in the last inning, getting three strikeouts to earn his second save of the day.

Gavura started the finale for Saint Peter's, allowing five runs over five innings, giving up six hits and recording seven strikeouts. Steve Epstein followed with one run on three hits over three innings.

Burlingame collected two hits and three RBI for Canisius' offense, and Preziuso scored three times and drove in two runs on his three hits. Morro also recorded a multi-hit game.

HEAD COACH MATT MAZUREK'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"We go into the weekend starting off wanting to win the series. That's goal number one. Then, if you can get a sweep, that's the cherry on top. We knew if we played the way we have all year, we could get that this weekend and we did.

"The staff did a great job. Fron ran into a little bit of trouble, but he was still pumping the zone and doing what he needed to. Then, Burm (Jared Burmaster) came in with a great hold and Will Frank was great at the end of game one. Nolan gave us a quality start, did his thing, and we got that game cleaned up in the backend as well. Then, we had Sip (Andrew Sipowicz), doing what Sip does. He had a great outing for us and we feed off of that. We had the opportunity to move him to the third game to keep him on a regular schedule, and he flourished and did a great job for us. Then, Will Frank comes in again, doing what Will Frank should do, and it was good to get him back out there in those situations to have that kind of success."
