Kent State Knocks Off Baseball to Split Season Series

RECAP
The Canisius baseball team could not get the offense going on Wednesday afternoon as the squad dropped a 10-1 contest to Kent State at Schoonover Stadium in Kent, Ohio.

The Golden Griffins fell to 19-19 overall, while the Golden Flashes improved to an identical 19-19 record with the win.

Leading the way for Canisius were senior Conner Morro and freshman Dylan Vincent as both cranked out two hits in the losing effort, including a double from Morro. On the home side, Ben Carew, Cam Touchette and Pavin Parks all tallied two hits for Kent State.

Striking first in the second inning, Parks put a solo shot off the scoreboard in right field to give the Flashes the early lead.

Kent State tacked on three more runs in the third when Michael Turner doubled down the left field line to plate a pair of runners. Parks then hit a double of his own to bring in Turner and open up a 4-0 lead.

The Griffs finally answered in the eighth, as junior pinch hitter Jacob Victor sent a sacrifice fly to center that allowed freshman Trevor Henneman to tag and score from third.

The Golden Flashes would not let the lead slip away, piling on six runs in the bottom of the eighth. Kian O'Brien added one off a passed ball on a dropped third strike, and Parks scored another on a wild pitch. Justin Kirby, Ben Carew and Cam Touchette then all tallied RBI singles, with Touchette driving in two off his base knock.

Parks would then move to the mound, allowing one hit to Vincent before closing out the nine-run victory.

Zach Schultz fared better in his second start against Canisius, allowing a hit and a walk over two innings, and Peyton Deats threw three innings of three-hit relief to earn the win. Tyler Drabick followed by issuing two walks in two innings. John Matthews allowed the lone Canisius run in his one inning while Parks recorded one strikeout.

Senior Andrew Kneussle has handed the loss after giving up four runs in 2.1 innings, fanning two and walking one. Fellow senior Jared Kennedy took over, allowing only a walk and punching out four in his 2.2 innings and sophomore Zach Chivers followed by retiring six-straight in two innings while striking out three. Junior Kyle Warner, freshman David Yankowski and sophomore Jeff DeStefano each allowed two runs as part of the six-run eighth inning.

HEAD COACH MATT MAZUREK'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Today, we took one on the chin but there were a few bright spots mixed in with guys like Dylan Vincent and Cole Hollins barreling baseballs and Jared Kennedy and Zach Chivers providing quality innings for us. We had a few learning opportunities with today's game and our goal is always to use our experience to our advantage next time out."

GAME NOTES
• Wednesday was the eighth all-time matchup between two schools, with Kent State's series lead now at 6-2.
