Offense Powers Baseball to Series-Clinching Win at Marist

RECAP
The Canisius baseball team once again used a hot start and fought back after surrendering the lead to edge out Marist, 8-6, Sunday afternoon at McCann Baseball Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The win improved the Golden Griffins to 16-18 overall and 9-3 in the MAAC, while the Red Foxes fell to 14-19 in 2019 and 5-4 in conference play.

Leading the way for the Griffs were senior Mark McKenna and redshirt-freshman Cole Hollins, who both collected three hits in the win. McKenna tallied a triple, an RBI and a run scored, while Hollins ripped a pair of doubles to knock in one RBI. Redshirt-junior William Krull supplanted that with a two-hit, three-RBI day that saw the catcher launch a two-run homer.

Canisius did not wait long to score on Sunday, as McKenna opened the game with a triple and junior Jacob Victor singled him in two batters later. The next at-bat had Krull smash his team-leading fourth home run of the season over the left-field wall, plating Victor and himself to give the Griffs the early 3-0 lead.

The Red Foxes finally answered back in the fourth, as Frankie Gregoire ripped a two-out double to plate Tyler Kapuscinski, and Reece Armitage singled home Gregoire for another run. Niko Amory later singled to score Armitage for the tying run.

Marist took the lead in the fifth when Kapuscinski hit a solo shot with one gone.

The Griffs responded quickly in the sixth, as a lead-off triple from junior Stephen Bennett was followed up by a Cole Hollins single that brought Bennett in and tied the ballgame at 4-4.

After junior Jake Burlingame drew a pinch-hit walk in the seventh, Victor moved him over to third on a single. Krull then flew out to right on a sacrifice that allowed Burlingame to score the Griffs' fifth run and retake the lead.

The Griffs added to their lead in the eighth, starting off with a walk by senior Conner Morro. Fellow senior Joseph Preziuso followed with a double, and an error on the play allowed Morro to score. Redshirt-freshman Mike Steffan then hit his own double, plating Preziuso, and McKenna singled to score Steffan and make it 8-4.

Marist cut the lead in the bottom of the eighth, as a Randy Taveras single set the stage for a Gregoire two-run homer that made it 8-6.

The combination of juniors Kyle Warner and Will Frank ended any chance of a Marist comeback, retiring all but one batter (a walk by Warner) to shut the door.

Sophomore Zach Chivers started the game on the hill for the Blue and Gold, as the lefty went three shutout innings while allowing one hit and striking out three. Senior Andrew Kneussle allowed four runs on five hits in his two innings, while freshman David Yankowski finished with two runs on five hits over two frames to be awarded the win. Warner went 1.1 innings to hold the lead, and Frank recorded a groundout and a strikeout for the save.

The Red Foxes' starter Alex Pansini finished his day after six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits while fanning eight. Ryan Cardona suffered the loss after allowing two runs on one hit and two walks in 1.1 innings. Conor McNamara ended the game on the mound for Marist, allowing two runs on four hits over 1.2 innings.

Offensively, Victor notched two hits for Canisius, and Preziuso also reached base safely twice. Kapuscinski led the Marist lineup with a three-hit game, tallying a double and homer, while Gregoire, Armitage and Amory all had multi-hit performances as well.

HEAD COACH MATT MAZUREK'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Today's game was a character win for us that showed what we are made of deep down. We were put in a situation we had not been in this year and our guys had the opportunity to respond the way we knew they could. It was back and forth, high emotion just like our Sunday game at Quinnipiac. Today we scored runs late to extend a lead and closed the door the ninth, so it showed our guys' ability to bounce back and learn from previous games to become better. It was impressive to see our guys resolve through the ups and downs of today. Everyone stepped up to pick one another up and get the series win.

"Mark McKenna is doing what we all know he is a capable of. For him, sometimes it just takes taking a step back and trying less for him to get more out of himself. Mark brings the team a lot of energy when things are going well, and it is great to see him back at full strength and doing what he does.

"Cole Hollins again had an impressive day and continues to trust in a process of adjustments he has made to have success. The impressive thing is his commitment to make himself better and sticking with it whether he is in the lineup or not. Weeks like he had this week make it hard not to keep him in the lineup."
