Sipowicz Tosses Gem, Baseball Splits at Marist

RECAP
The Canisius baseball team took the first game of a doubleheader, 4-2, before dropping the nightcap to Marist, 8-3, on Saturday afternoon at McCann Baseball Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The split moved the Griffs to 15-18 overall and 8-3 in the MAAC, while the Red Foxes shifted to 14-18 in 2019 and 5-3 in conference play.

In the first game, senior Andrew Sipowicz tossed eight strong innings to pick up his third-straight win, while senior Mark McKenna launched a two-run home run to power the Canisius offense. Game two featured Marist's Tony Romanelli throwing a complete game and Robbie Armitage driving in four RBI, while McKenna punched out two more hits.

GAME ONE
The Griffs opened up the scoring in the third inning, as junior Jake Burlingame singled with one out. A wild pitch and a Marist throwing error allowed Burlingame to scoot over to third, where fellow junior Andy Leader was able to drive in the first run of the game with a single.

Redshirt-freshman Mike Steffan added another run to the board for Canisius in the fourth, hitting a sacrifice fly that scored senior Conner Morro from third.

McKenna, who hit one home run through his first three seasons, mashed his second homer in as many games during the top-half of the sixth. McKenna's blast followed a Morro single, and the two-run shot gave the Griffs a 4-0 advantage.

Marist answered back with a homer of its own in the bottom of the sixth, as a Randy Taveras two-out single brought up Frankie Gregoire. Gregoire proceeded to put a ball over the fence in left field, cutting the lead to 4-2.

The score would remain that way, as junior Kyle Warner put down the Red Foxes in order after issuing a lead-off walk to open the bottom of the ninth.

Sipowicz finished his day with seven strikeouts over a career-high eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Warner earned the save, striking out one batter over his one inning.

Skyler Pichardo suffered the loss, allowing all four runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings. Zane Kmietek followed Pichardo, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four Griffs.

Offensively, senior Joseph Preziuso collected two hits, including a double, while junior Stephen Bennett also doubled. Gregoire's homer was the lone extra-base hit for Marist, reaching base other time via the walk by Warner.

GAME TWO
Marist opened the scoring by ripping off three-straight singles to start the bottom of the first, and added two more in the frame when Reece Armitage singled home Tyler Kapuscinski and Robbie Armitage.

Robbie Armitage added to the lead in the second, hitting a three-run shot to left.

Canisius came back in the top of the third with three runs, as a bases-loaded single by redshirt-junior William Krull and a Marist fielding error brought Leader and McKenna in. Burlingame then plated junior Jacob Victor with a sacrifice fly for the third run.

Marist added two more runs in the fifth, as Reece Armitage singled home Gregoire and Armitage later reached home on a wild pitch to put the lead at 8-3.

Tony Romanelli earned the win for Marist, pitching a complete game and allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits. For Canisius, senior Nolan Hunt lasted two innings, allowing six runs on nine hits to record the loss. Junior Jarod Burmaster followed Hunt with four innings of two-run ball, allowing six hits.

McKenna recorded two hits in the loss, including a first-inning double. For Marist, Robbie Armitage tallied four hits and four RBI, while Anthony Lazar knocked out three hits. Reece Armitage, Kapuscinski and Gregoire all recorded multi-hit games as well.

HEAD COACH MATT MAZUREK'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Sipowicz pitched great for us - he anchored down in the seventh and eighth and put us on his back. He was in control all day and he got what he deserved.

"In game two, we took some lumps but now we have an opportunity to see how we respond with a series on the line in game three."
