Fron, Bullpen Lead Baseball to 9-0 Shutout Over Niagara

Recap
Freshman right-hander Andrew Fron and the Canisius baseball team were able to shut out rival Niagara on Wednesday afternoon at Bobo Field in Lewiston, N.Y., as the Golden Griffins used a six-run first inning and a one-hit start from Fron over five innings to earn the 9-0 victory.

The Griffs moved to 9-15 with the non-conference win, while the Purple Eagles' record fell to 6-15.

Supporting Fron's effort on the mound, fellow freshman Trevor Henneman and sophomore Jacob Martins both tallied two hits, with Henneman driving in two runs and Martins recording an RBI and a walk. Junior Jacob Victor also plated two RBI with his first collegiate triple.

The Griffs' offense was feeling good early in the first, as junior Andy Leader walked to start the ballgame and junior Jake Burlingame singled before Victor hit a the two-run triple to open the scoring. Martins later singled home Victor and senior Joseph Preziuso doubled to plate Martins, before Henneman singled to score Preziuso. Freshman Dylan Vincent then scored off a Henneman steal, finishing off the six-run opening frame for the Blue and Gold.

Canisius would tack on three more runs in the eighth, as a Henneman single with two runners on were followed by a pair of Niagara errors that allowed both Preziuso and Vincent to cross home. Freshman Kyle Kush then plated Henneman on an error by the Niagara pitcher, extending the lead to 9-0.

Fron finished the game with one strikeout while allowing one hit and three walks. Senior Jared Kennedy relieved Fron and recorded two strikeouts and one hit allowed in his one inning of work, while junior Carson Perkins got out of a bases-loaded jam in an inning of work. Freshmen Alec Ritzenthaler and Brett Kochanski also pitched perfect frames in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.

For Niagara, starter Jacob Bruning rebounded after the first inning with a scoreless second to finish with six runs on six hits in two innings, all while striking out four batters, to pick up the loss. Cal Theal was the other Niagara pitcher to allow runs, giving up three (one earned) in his inning on the hill. Evan Kiser, Kyle Smyth, Alex MacKinnon, Jordan Parranto and Tyler Howard all pitched scoreless innings, with Kiser going two frames.

Benny Serrano, Peter Battaglia, Alex Zulia, Cole O'Connor and Darian Blanks all recorded singles for the Purple Eagles.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Overall, today was a good day for us. We got out to a strong start offensively which is something we talk about often and helps set the tone for us on both sides of the ball.

"Fron had his second quality start in a row. It is great to see his maturation in a short amount of time. We still have some things to refine and clean up but to get out there and compete against an opponent during the mid-week is better than practice at this point in the year."

Game Notes
• This was the 173rd all-time meeting between the two long-time rivals, with Canisius now holding a 94-79 advantage in the series.
• For the 11th-straight year, the Griffs have taken the opening game of the season series against Niagara.
• Canisius has recorded 10-plus hits in eight of its last 12 games.
