Early Offensive Explosion Gives Baseball Win Over Manhattan

Recap
The Canisius baseball team came out of the gates swinging, putting up four runs in both the first and second innings of a 10-4 victory over Manhattan Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

The win improved the Golden Griffins to 10-15 overall and 4-0 in MAAC play, while the visiting Jaspers moved to 7-17 on the season and 0-1 in conference action.

Junior Jacob Victor continued to be a run-producing machine for the Griffs, driving in four runs on three hits while scoring twice himself. Redshirt-junior William Krull and junior Stephen Bennett also tallied three hits, as they both recorded a home run and a double. Sophomore Jacob Martins homered as well in a two-hit performance to go with a stolen base.

Victor helped plate the Blue and Gold's first two runs of the day with a first-inning single up the middle that scored fellow juniors Andy Leader and Jake Burlingame. Bennett later doubled to score Victor, and scoring himself when Martins reached base on a Manhattan fielding error.

In the next inning, Victor tallied his third RBI when he singled home Leader, and Krull followed with a two-run, inside-the-park home run. Bennett then went back-to-back with Krull, hitting a longball of his own to give Canisius the early 8-0 lead.

Manhattan put their first run of the afternoon on the scoreboard when Dominic Palma was plunked with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom half of the sixth frame, Martins launched his first round-trip shot of the season when he sent one out to straight-away center.

Manhattan threatened with three runs in the sixth inning, as Dominic Palma led off with a homer. The Jaspers then singled in three-straight at-bats, eventually allowing Santiago Riera to plate Matt Padre, while Sam Franco later ripped a two-out double to bring in the third run of the frame.

Victor tacked on another run for Canisius when he singled to score Leader again in the eighth.

On the mound for Canisius, senior Andrew Sipowicz picked up his first victory of 2019 by tossing five-plus innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits while walking two and punching out one. Junior Kyle Warner went on to record the first save of his career for the Griffs, yielding just four Manhattan base-runners while fanning four in four innings of work.

Manhattan was led by Palma's solo shot and a three-hit day from the leadoff hitter Franco. Nick Cimillo, Alex Cerda and Riera all tallied two hits in the game as well. Jaspers' starter John Cain finished with nine runs (eight earned) allowed on nine hits in just four frames, being saddled with the loss, while Carson Coon allowed one unearned run on four hits through his four innings on the mound.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was the kind of day where a quality start and the offense coming out hot were big keys to the victory.

"Vic (Jacob Victor) has been great for us and that's a credit to his work ethic. He puts in a lot of time on his offensive approach and it shows."
