Game Recap: Baseball |

Kentucky Hands Baseball Two Losses in Doubleheader

The Canisius baseball team could not come out of Kentucky with a win Saturday afternoon at Kentucky Proud Park in Lexington, Ky., dropping both games of a doubleheader. The Wildcats used 13 hits to win the first game, 12-3, and the Golden Griffins dropped a close one in the series finale, 4-3.

The two wins move Kentucky to 8-3 on the season, while the Griffs fall to 3-7 in 2019.

Redshirt-junior William Krull was an offensive threat all day for Canisius, going a combined 4-for-6 in the twin-bill while totaling two doubles and a walk. Redshirt-freshman Mike Steffan continued to be a catalyst atop the lineup, collecting a hit in each game and driving in two runs. Kentucky had Breydon Daniel, Dalton Reed and Coltyn Kessler all register three hits over the two games, while Zeke Lewis knocked in four RBI in game one.

Game One Recap
Kentucky wasted little time getting the first run of the game, as Daniel led off the bottom of the first with a single and later scored on a T.J. Collett sacrifice fly.

Kentucky added another run on a sacrifice fly in the second, as Lewis flew out to center with the bases loaded, plating Kessler for a 2-0 lead. Ryan Shinn then homered to start off the latter half of the third, making it a 3-0 advantage for UK.

The Wildcats' baserunning tacked on two more in the fourth, as an error by the Griffs on a double steal plated Alex Rodriguez, while a pick-off attempt on the trail runner later in the inning with runners on second and third allowed Daniel to score.

Kentucky plated another two in the fifth, as back-to-back singles from Lewis and Daniel with the bases loaded extended the Kentucky lead to 7-0.

Canisius finally got on the board in the sixth, when freshman Trevor Henneman walked and senior Joseph Preziuso doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Steffan drove in Henneman with a single and Preziuso scored when senior Conner Morro grounded into a double play, cutting the lead to 7-2.

Reed made it a seven-run lead again in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a two-run home run to left.

The Griffs cut the lead again in the eighth, as Henneman came in to score off a sacrifice fly by Steffan, moving the score to 9-3.

Kentucky answered back in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs to put the lead at 12-3, as Lewis scored two with a single and Austin Schultz followed right after his own RBI single.

That would be it for either side, as Dillon Marsh earned the win for Kentucky, throwing five innings while allowing two runs and three hits. The four relievers out of the bullpen after him combined to allow one hit and one unearned run in four innings.

Senior Andrew Kneussle recorded the loss, being credited with five runs, three of them earned, in 3.1 innings of work. Senior Jared Kennedy followed Kneussle with four runs over two innings, and freshman Andrew Fron surrendered three runs in his 2.1 innings of relief.

Lewis led the Wildcats with four RBI as part of a 2-for-4 contest, and Reed chipped in two RBI and three runs on two hits. For Canisius, Steffan was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in, and Henneman scored two runs while walking once.

Game Two Recap
The Golden Griffins were the team to strike first in the second game, as freshman Dylan Vincent led off the third with a double to down the third base line and Morro singled two batters later, driving in Vincent.

Daniel flipped the lead in favor of Kentucky in the bottom of the inning, scoring Schultz with a two-run home run.

The Griffs did not stay behind long, as a double and a wild pitch put Krull on third, and junior Jake Burlingame cashed Krull in with a game-tying single. Vincent later plated Burlingame on a play that was originally ruled a double play but was overturned to an RBI fielder's choice, giving Canisius the lead once again at 3-2.

Jaren Shelby retook the lead for Kentucky in the fifth, plating two runs with a single up the middle and giving UK the 4-3 edge. The game would end that way, as neither team would score over the final three and a half innings.

Reliever Cole Daniels picked up the win for UK, striking out three in one shutout inning. Hunter Rigsby and Carson Coleman both threw two shutout innings, with Coleman earning the save. Starter Jimmy Ramsey only went four innings, giving up all three Canisius runs on six hits.

Junior Jarod Burmaster was handed the loss after pitching two innings in relief, allowing one run and three hits. Sophomore Jeff DeStefano finished his third start by going four innings, surrendering three runs on four hits, striking out three. David Yankowski took over for Burmaster in the seventh, throwing two scoreless innings and recording a walk and strikeout.

Kentucky was led by Daniel and Shelby as both batters drove in two runs apiece, while Collett collected two hits, including a double. Krull led the Blue and Gold with a 3-for-4 performance, notching a pair of doubles. Steffan and Vncent both doubled and walked as well.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was a tough one. We gave them too many free opportunities in game one and that hurt us, free opportunities to teams like that will come back to bite you.

"In game two we showed more fight, both on the mound and at the plate. We put together good at-batss but lacked the timely hit when we needed it most.

"We need to be learning from weekends like this to help us moving forward."
