Baseball’s Late Rally Falls Short at Wright State

Game Recap
A two-run eighth inning was not enough for the Canisius baseball team to comeback from an early deficit as the Golden Griffins fell to Wright State, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium in Dayton, Ohio.

The win moves the Raiders to 5-4 on the season, while the Golden Griffins fell to 3-8 in 2019.

Canisius junior Jake Burlingame and Wright State's Seth Gray powered the two offenses. Burlingame went 1-for-2 with two walks and accounted for the Griffs' first run of the game, while Gray recorded two hits, including a home run, and drove in all three Raider runs.

The Raiders did not wait long to get on the board, as Seth Gray took advantage of the bases being loaded, smacking a one-out single that that gave Wright State an early 2-0 cushion.

Gray extended the lead in the sixth, putting a solo shot over the fence down the right-field line.

The Griffs rallied in the eighth, as a Jacob Martins double play with the bases loaded allowed Burlingame to score, cutting the lead to 3-1. The next at-bat saw freshman Dylan Vincent come across home plate on a wild pitch, pulling Canisius to a 3-2 deficit.

Entering with two gone in the eighth, Evan Moores closed the door on the Griffs and earned the save, throwing 1.1 innings and striking out three. Bear Bellomy picked up the win for WSU, tossing seven innings of two-run ball.

Senior right-hander Andrew Sipowicz was handed the loss despite only giving up one run in five innings of relief. Junior righty Jarod Burmaster started the game for the Blue and Gold, allowing two runs over three innings in a no-decision.

Vincent also finished the game with a hit and a run scored, while four other Griffs drew walks.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was another tough one. We started out flat offensively and just did not do much offensively, and when we did, we shot ourselves in the foot with base-running and our approach.

"The mound was a bright spot for us today and when you pitch like that you need to get more offense behind you. We did take advantage of opportunities late to mount a rally to get back in it which is something to take moving forward. However, it was too little too late. On to the next opportunity!"

Game Notes
• This was the sixth all-time meeting between Canisius and Wright State, with the Raiders leading the series 5-1.
• Martins and Burmaster both made their first starts of the season. This marked Burmaster's first career start on the mound as a Griff.
• Senior Conner Morro's eighth-inning walk extended his on-base streak to 20 games, continuing a streak that began May 17, 2018 against Marist.
