Kentucky Rallies Late to Win, 10-2, Over Baseball

Game Recap
Despite carrying an early lead, the Canisius baseball team saw Kentucky rally in the seventh inning to take the win, 10-2, on Friday afternoon at Kentucky Proud Park in Lexington, Ky. The win moves Kentucky to 6-3 on the season, while the Griffs fell to 3-5 in 2019.

Coltyn Kessler led the Kentucky offense with his three RBI and a double in a 2-for-4 day, while senior Mark McKenna drove in both runs for the Griffs with his third-inning double and junior Andy Leader added two hits to go 2-for-3.

Senior Andrew Sipowicz threw five strong innings, allowing one run and four hits while striking out six in his third start of the season. Wildcats starter Zack Thompson had a career-high 11 strikeouts in six innings, allowing both Canisius runs on six hits.

The Griffs opened the scoring in the third, as redshirt-freshman Mike Steffan singled and senior Conner Morro walked to set up a McKenna double down the left field line, plating both runners for a 2-0 advantage. The lead would be cut to one in the bottom of the frame, as Kenutcky got their first run of the game when T.J. Collett ripped a single with two runners on to make it a 2-1 game.

The game would remain 2-1 until the seventh, as Kentucky broke through when Jaren Shelby reached base on a dropped sacrifice fly, scoring Grant Macciocchi to tie the game. T.J. Collett followed with an RBI single and a Ryan Shinn single loaded the bases, allowing Dalton Reed to drive in a run on a sacrifice fly. One batter later, Kessler singled up the middle to plate two more runs, extending the lead to 6-2.

The eighth was another offensive frame for the Wildcats, scoring four more runs. A double by Shinn plated one, while another dropped sacrifice fly by Canisius allowed the eighth Kentucky run to come in. Shinn then scored on a wild pitch and Reed later crossed home on a sacrifice fly.

Daniel Harper earned the win for Kentucky, throwing three shutout innings in relief. Junior Kyle Warner recorded the loss, being credited with three runs, two of them earned, in 1.1 innings of work. Junior Carson Perkins allowed two unearned runs in 0.1 innings, while sophomore Zach Chivers pitched 0.2 innings, with two of his four runs being earned.

Six Canisius batters recorded hits, as redshirt-junior William Krull tallied his second double of the season and Morro drew two walks in the contest.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"We had some things go well for us both on the mound and at the plate early in the game and then we hit some adversity and could not overcome the mistakes."
