Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight, Beating Iona, 67-47

Game Recap
Three Golden Griffins tallied double-digits in the scoring column as Canisius rolled to a 67-47 win over the Gaels of Iona College in MAAC women's basketball action Monday night.

Canisius improves to 9-12 overall and 7-3 in MAAC play, while Iona drops its 18th-straight game falling to 1-21 overall and 0-11 in conference play.

Senior Sara Hinriksdottir led the way for Canisius with 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Rome, N.Y., product Tiana Pugh recorded her fourth-straight double-figure scoring outing with 14 points, while adding three boards, two steals and two blocks. Sophomore Anndea Zeigler added 12 points and collected five caroms off the bench for the Griffs. The Golden Griffins shot over 50 percent for the second-straight game, finishing the night with a field goal percentage of 55.1 percent, including a 77.8 percent clip from the perimeter.

Iona was led by Morgan Rachu's eight points on just 2-for-12 shooting, followed by three Gaels with seven points apiece, Shyan Mwai, Monica Barefield and Juana Camilion. Iona shot just 28.3 percent from the floor and 17.2 percent from beyond the 3-point line.

Canisius' first half was supported by a 28-6 scoring run that lasted over 11 minutes of game time. During the run, Hinriksdottir scored all 13 of her first half points and Zeigler added eight points to help give Canisius a 38-19 advantage at the intermission.

In the third quarter, Iona would pull within 16-points after Lesko completed a 3-point play to make the score 38-22. However, Canisius would respond with a 5-0 scoring run, highlighted by a trey from Pugh, her second of the contest, to build the lead back up to 43-22. The Gaels made the score 45-32, with 8:31 left in the fourth on another Lesko 3-point play.

The Blue and Gold would answer again as they broke off a 6-0 run capped off by a fast break layup by Hinriksdottir, forcing an Iona timeout. Olivia Vernon would put the nail in Iona's coffin with a jump shot just outside the paint to make the score 67-44 and give Canisius its largest lead of the game with just 22 seconds left on the clock. Iona's Shayla Middlebrooks added a 3-pointer with six seconds left to give the game its 67-47 final.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"They are starting to figure out what it takes to be competitive in this conference and what it takes to win. Yes, we still turn the ball over too much and we give up too many offensive rebounds, but if you look at the shooting percentages, if you fix those two things we got a pretty nice squad."

Game Notes
• Canisius is now 27-35 against Iona all-time and is currently riding a three-game win streak against the Gaels.
• The win over Iona marked the Griffs third straight win in conference play and its seventh win in their last 10 games, giving Canisius its best 10 game start in MAAC play since the 2008-09 season.
