Women's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Fairfield

Game Recap
Senior Sara Hinriksdottir records a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Griffins fell to MAAC foe Fairfield Thursday night, 72-65. Canisius falls to 7-4 in MAAC play and 9-13 overall, while the Stags improve to 3-8 in league play and 6-16 on the season.

Junior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks and sophomore Danielle Sanderlin tallied 19 and 14 points, respectively, while sophomore Anndea Zeigler added seven points off the bench in the loss. As a team, Canisius made 50.0 percent of its field goal attempts and just 29.4 percent of its attempts from the perimeter. The Blue and Gold out-rebounded the Stags 36-26 in the contest.

Fairfield had three players record double-figures with redshirt-junior Katie Armstrong leading the way with 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting, including a perfect 4-for-4 clip from deep. Freshman Lou Lopez-Senechal added 16 points and seven rebounds, while teammate senior Casey Foley tallied 14 points, going 4-for-9 from deep. The Stags went 13-for-26 from behind the 3-point line, a 50.0 percent clip, as well as 24-for-52 from the floor for a 46.2 percent mark. Fairfield scored 22 points off of Canisius turnovers, six of which came on fast break opportunities.

After trailing 6-0 after the first two and a half minutes of the game, Canisius rolled off an 11-0 scoring run, leading to an 18-12 lead after one-quarter of play. Fairfield outscored the Griffs 20-10 in the second and took a 32-28 advantage into the locker rooms, after ending the frame with back-to-back 3-pointers. The Stags built its lead up to as much as 13-points in the third quarter after Armstrong capped of a 6-0 run to make the score 50-37.

In the fourth quarter, each time Canisius would get close to possibly tying the game, the Stags would go right back down the court and answer with a bucket of their own. The Blue and Gold had the game within four-points five times in the fourth, but it wasn't until Patterson-Ricks hit a 3-pointer from the elbow that Canisius would make it a one-possession game. However, from there Canisius was forced to foul Fairfield, allowing them to ice the game and defeat the Golden Griffins 72-65 to split the season series.

Head Coach Scott Hemer Postgame Comments
"We can not pick and choose when we are going to play hard, especially on the road. In the second quarter we allowed our shooting struggles to affect our defensive effort and Fairfield got hot. Good teams find ways to overcome adversity and unfortunately we are simply not there yet"

• Fairfield now holds a 38-26 advantage over Canisius in the all-time series.
