Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Sanderlin's late game heroics lift Women's Basketball over Niagara

Canisius defeated rival Niagara (12-17, 8-9 MAAC) in the final minute of Wednesday evenings MAAC women's basketball contest. Sophomore Danielle Sanderlin hit the game-winning shot with 17.3 seconds left to give the Golden Griffins (11-17, 9-8 MAAC) the 52-51 win.

Sanderlin finished the game with 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting, while teammates D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks and Sara Hinriksdottir tallied 13 and 10 points, respectively. Hinriksdottir grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Patterson-Ricks corralled six boards. The Golden Griffins finished the game with a 40.3 field goal percentage and 72.7 percent mark from the free throw line.

Niagara was led by Jai Moore who scored 28 points for the Purple and White on 10-for-18 shooting, including a 3-for-9 mark from 3-point range. Adilia Gathers snagged 10 caroms to help Niagara win the battle on the boards 39-34.

Canisius and Niagara traded the lead five times in the first half with neither team going up by any more than six points in the first two quarters. After Canisius controlled most of the first quarter, Niagara took control in the second frame, erasing a six-point deficit to take a 22-20 lead into the intermission.

It didn't take long for Canisius to retake the lead in the third quarter as senior Maria Welch finished a 3-point play at the line to give the Griffs a 23-22 lead.

Canisius would build its advantage to 32-25 4:23 seconds into the frame, before Niagara clawed back to take a 35-34 lead, three minutes later. The Golden Griffins took back the lead at the 1:15 mark as junior Tiana Pugh made both of her shots at the line, followed by a Patterson-Ricks 3-pointer to give the Blue and Gold a four-point cushion heading into the final 10 minutes.

Patterson-Ricks made it a six-point lead for Canisius after making a layup in the lane. Over the next eight minutes, Niagara would chip away at the Griffs lead once again, taking control at the 2:46 mark after Moore hit a jumper in the paint to make the score 47-45. Moore would hit another jumper on the Purple Eagles next possession to extend Niagara's lead to four.

Sanderlin took over in the final two and a half minutes of the game, giving the Griffs the lead back at the 50-second mark and again for the last time with 17 seconds left, giving Canisius the split of the season series with Niagara.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"On word, heart, they played with heart. That was anybody's game in the last couple minutes, and I thought in the second half they were determined to leave it all on the floor. It wasn't pretty every stretch of the way but they did walk out of that gym not having to make excuses and I am proud of them for that."
