Niagara Rolls Past Women's Basketball

Game Recap
Niagara junior Jai Moore scored a game-high 30 points in Niagara's dominate 74-52 victory over Canisius in MAAC women's basketball action Wednesday night. The Purple Eagles move to 12-13 on the season and 8-5 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins drop to 9-15 overall and 7-6 in conference play.

Seniors Kharysma Bryant and Adila Gathers also recorded double-figures for the Purple Eagles, scoring 14 and 10 points, respectively. Gathers led Niagara with nine rebounds in the win. As a team, Niagara had a field goal percentage of 41.4 percent and 36.7 percent clip from behind the 3-point line. Niagara scored 30 points in the paint, and its bench recorded 27 points for the game.

Three Golden Griffins recorded double-digits in the loss, led by junior Tiana Pugh's 14 points. Fellow junior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks and sophomore Anndea Zeigler each tallied 10 points on the night, going a combined 5-for-18 from the field, while Danielle Sanderlin grabbed nine caroms. Canisius attempted 59 field goals, making just 16 of them for a 27.1 percent mark. The Blue and Gold did get the edge on the glass, grabbing 43 rebounds compared to Niagara's 42.

Niagara led from the opening tip as they started the game with a 12-2 run. Canisius would make the score 12-9 after a 7-0 run before Bryant scored the final bucket of the first quarter to make the score 15-9.

In the second quarter, Canisius would keep the game close, getting within two points, 22-20, after a 3-pointer from Patterson-Ricks. From there, however, Niagara would outscore the Griffs 13-5 in the final five minutes of the first half to go into the break with a 35-25 lead.

In the third quarter, Niagara outscored Canisius 27-13, going 8-for-15 from the floor, including a 3-for-7 mark from the perimeter, taking a commanding 62-38 lead. Canisius was unable to slow down the Purple Eagles in the fourth as they matched nearly every point Canisius would put up in the frame, coasting to a 74-52 win.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"I think unfortunately we were outclassed by Niagara in every aspect of the game and that is a credit to them. The disappointing part for me was we looked completely unprepared, from communication to execution, and as a coach that is very disappointing and I have to do a better job of taking care of that."

Game Notes
• Following the loss, Canisius' lead in the all-time series was trimmed to 59-36.
• For the ninth time this season, Sanderlin collected seven-plus rebounds.
• Pugh led the team in scoring for the fourth time during the 18-19 campaign.
• Patterson-Ricks recorded her 15th double-digit scoring night on the year.
