Slow Start Dooms Women's Basketball in Loss to Vermont

Game Recap
The Catamounts had five players record double-digit scoring numbers, led by Josie Larkins and Emma Utterback who each recorded 15 points, propelling Vermont to a 76-53 win over Canisius (1-5) Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball in Patrick Gym in Burlington, Vt.

Hanna Crymble and Sarah Wells added 14 points, while Delaney Richardson contributed 13 points for Vermont (4-6). Crymble added a game-high 11 rebounds to record the double-double. As a team, Vermont shot 48.4 percent from the field, going 31-of-64. The Catamounts outscored the Golden Griffins in the paint (40-20), on fast break opportunities (10-2) and on turnovers (18-2).

Senior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks scored a game-high 19 points, going 6-for-14 from the field and 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Sophomore transfer Shayla Sweeney added a season-high 13 points, while redshirt senior and fellow transfer AJ Timbers contributed 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds in the loss. As a team, Canisius shot 31.1 percent (19-for-61) from the floor and 41.2 percent (7-for-17) from 3-point range. The Griffs were also successful on eight of their 11 attempts from the line. Canisius out rebounded Vermont 40-38.

The Catamounts got out in front early courtesy of a 10-0 run in the first 4:45 of game action forcing Canisius to use one of its timeouts early. Vermont and Canisius would trade blows for the remainder of the frame resulting in Vermont taking a 22-12 lead into the second quarter.

Vermont would have a hot start to the second quarter, starting the frame on a 9-2 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Wells. Canisius would trim what was a 17-point Vermont lead to just 10-points, 35-25, after Patterson-Ricks connected for her third-straight 3-pointer at the 4:47 mark. Over the next 3:19, Vermont built its lead all the way back up to 17-points after Larkins hit a 3-pointer from the wing to make the score 43-29. Vermont would then take a 46-34 lead into the break.

Neither team would score for the first 3:52 of action in the second half before Vermont opened the scoring with a jumper just outside the paint. Canisius would score just 12 points in the quarter, allowing the Catamounts to take a 62-44 lead after 30-minutes of action.

It was more of the same from the Canisius offense in the fourth and final frame as the Griffs only mustard-up nine points in the final 10-minutes. The Catamounts got its largest lead of the game, 70-44, at the 4:27 mark of the fourth when Utterback made both chances at the line. Vermont wouldn't allow Canisius to get any closer than 22-points the rest of the way, resulting in a 23-point win for the Catamounts.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"When you start slow on someone else's court, it is difficult to get on the bus afterward with a win. At the end of the day, Vermont was much more physical near the rim and finished those types of plays more easily than we did."
