Hockey Completes Sweep of Holy Cross

Senior Nick Hutchison tallied three points and freshman Jacob Barczewski recorded 33 saves to pace Canisius in a 3-1 victory over Holy Cross in Atlantic Hockey action Sunday at KeyBank Rink at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Hutchison scored two goals, including the game winner, and added an assist for his second straight three-point outing while sophomore Lee Lapid opened the scoring for the Golden Griffins (4-12-0, 3-7-0 AHA), who completed a sweep of its league series with Sunday's victory.

Barczewski picked up his second straight victory as he held the visiting Crusaders (3-11-4, 2-10-2 AHA) to just one power-play tally from the stick of Connor Jean despite Holy Cross out-shooting Canisius by a 34-15 margin for the contest.

Lapid staked Canisius to an early 1-0 lead with a power-play goal, jamming home a rebound just 2:02 into the contest after the initial attempt from Hutchison was turned aside by Holy Cross netminder Matt Radomsky.

Hutchison doubled the Canisius margin at the 7:21 mark of the second period when he deposited a loose puck into the Holy Cross goal after a shot from freshman defenseman Hudson Lambert was kicked into the slot by Radomsky.

Hutchison struck again to stretch the Griffs advantage to 3-0 just before the six-minute mark of the third, firing a centering feed from fellow senior Matt Hoover off the crossbar and in from the middle of the slot for the 50th goal of his collegiate career.

Holy Cross finally solved Barczewski a little more than two minutes after Hutchison's second of the contest as Jean found the back of the net on a cross-ice feed from Pete Kessel to pull the Crusaders within two.

That would be as close as Holy Cross would get, however, as Barczewski and the Griffs kept the Crusaders off the board the rest of the way to complete the weekend sweep.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"Tonight was a hard-fought battle by our team. I loved the compete that we had tonight. Holy Cross, for 60 minutes, played an extremely-aggressive game. There were moments where we were hanging on and I was proud of the effort that we had in those moments. Our top line was obviously great tonight, getting all three goals, with one of them coming on the power play. Barczewski was unbelievable in goal tonight as well. That's a great recipe for success moving forward, having your goalie as your best player, your top line playing like top-line players and everybody else grinding as hard as they could. I am so proud of the weekend for our guys. I felt that we've deserved it and this weekend we got the results.

"The penalty kill was awesome today, Barczewski was a big piece of that. We needed him to make some big saves. We had a couple of penalty kills in a row late in the game and man, they were awesome. I think about all the guys, Buzzy (David Baskerville), (J.D.) Pogue, Casey (Jerry) went out on a couple of shifts, Hoover and G (Grant Meyer) were great on it. It required everything. It required face-off wins, blocked shots and systematic IQ that we were able to showcase on the penalty kill that really is a big part of winning and they were spectacular tonight, so I couldn't be happier for them."
