Hockey Plays to 1-1 Tie Versus RIT

Senior Matt Hoover scored his fifth goal of the season and freshman Jacob Barczewski made 23 saves to pace Canisius in a 1-1 tie versus RIT in Atlantic Hockey action Friday at the Gene Polisseni Center in Rochester, N.Y.

Jake Joffe accounted for the lone goal in regulation for the Tigers (10-6-3, 7-5-3 AHA) and also tallied the lone goal in the sudden-death shootout to give RIT the extra point in the league standings.

Senior Matt Stief and junior Austin Alger picked up assists on Hoover's third-period goal for the Golden Griffins (4-12-1, 3-7-1 AHA).

Joffe staked RIT to a 1-0 lead just 4:59 into the contest as he finished off a 2-on-1 break with a wrist shot past the blocker of Barczewski.

Following a scoreless second, Hoover tied the game at 1-1 just 2:32 into the third when he one-timed a feed from Stief past RIT goalkeeper Logan Drackett while the Griffs were on the power play for his fifth of the campaign.

In overtime, Canisius had a power-play opportunity in the final minute of 5-on-5 overtime and into the 3-on-3 session, but were unable to solve Drackett.

The game headed to a sudden-death shootout, where both teams were held off the board until the second half of the third round, when Joffe beat Barczewski with a shot to the glove side to determine the recipient of the extra point.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"I loved our compete tonight. Something that was obvious to me was that the first two periods, everybody wearing blue and gold could understand that it was not our best effort. We stayed together, we were down one goal in a game where maybe we shouldn't have been, but we were there, and then we go out in the third period and earn some power plays and get a power-play goal, it really felt like we took over the game from the middle of that third period and into overtime. We had lots of chances for us to put an end to the game in overtime, but it was a huge save by Drackett on Hoover at the end. That was an unbelievable save. There were a couple of things that we just didn't finish, and then we get our first experience with three-on-three and our first experience with the shootout. They're fun. That's for sure, they're fun, but we're really proud of the effort that our guys made, specifically from the third period through the remainder of the game.

"Tonight, we learned more about what it takes when you're down one going into the third period. When you're on the road, you know it's going to require a lot to get that game-tying goal. If you were on our bench or if anybody watched our bench, we were extremely together. It took everybody, everybody played. We lost Lee Lapid early in the game to a five-minute major and felt like we were shorthanded, but the group rallied together, and gave everything they had on every shift and that's really what you take moving forward, that you have to outwork an opponent if you stand any chance to win any game in our league, so we start with that."

Game Notes
• Friday's contest served as the 41st meeting between Canisius and RIT since the Tigers joined Atlantic Hockey prior to the start of the 2005-06 season. Canisius saw its record shift to 16-23-2 in those contests with Friday's tie.
• Friday's tie marked the first draw between the programs since a 3-3 deadlock on Nov. 14, 2014 at Harborcenter.
• RIT out-shot Canisius by a 24-19 margin in the contest, highlighted by an 11-2 margin in the first period.
• Canisius held its opponent to one goal or less for the second straight contest and third time this season with Friday's tie.
• Canisius was 1-for-6 with the power play while RIT was 0-for-1. Both teams failed to score during a five-minute power play.
• Hoover's power-play goal was his team-leading fourth of the campaign, breaking a three-way tie for the team lead in that category.
• With his assist on Hoover's third-period tally, Stief matched his career high in points with his 14th point of the campaign. All but two of Stief's 14 points (1g, 11a) this season have come while the Griffs have been on the power play.
