Hockey Defeated by Army in Series Finale

Eric Butte tallied the game-winning goal late in the third period for the second straight contest to lift Army to a 3-2 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at KeyBank Rink at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Michael Wilson and Zach Evancho also scored for the Black Knights (10-4-0, 8-4-0 AHA), who earned a sweep of the league series and extend their winning streak to three games.

Sophomore Lee Lapid and freshman Ryan Miotto accounted for the two Golden Griffins' (2-10-0, 1-5-0 AHA) goals.

With the score tied at 2-2 and less than seven minutes remaining in regulation, Evancho took a pass from Wilson below the goal line and fed Butte in the slot, where he slid the puck between the legs of Canisius goaltender Daniel Urbani to give the Black Knights the lead.

The Griffs turned up the pressure in search of the equalizer and were rewarded with a pair of power-play opportunities during the final five minutes of regulation, but Army goaltender Trevin Kozlowski and the Black Knights' defense kept Canisius off the scoreboard to preserve the one-goal victory.

Earlier in the contest, Wilson gave Army a 1-0 lead during the opening minute into the second period when put home a back-post feed from Thomas Farrell after the Griffs were unable to clear the zone.

Evancho doubled the Black Knights margin to 2-0 at the 4:33 mark of the frame, beating Urbani with a shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle on a cross-ice pass from Andrew Quetell after his initial attempt was turned aside.

Lapid got Canisius on the board just past the midway point of the contest, jamming home his own rebound from just off the left post for his third of the campaign to make it a one-goal game.

Miotto brought the Griffs level with 2:18 remaining in the second period, beating Kozlowski to the glove side with a wrist shot from the right face-off circle during an odd-man rush while Canisius was skating two men shorthanded for his first collegiate goal.

Urbani made 24 saves in goal for Canisius while Kozlowski turned aside 25 shots between the pipes for Army.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"It was a gritty game today. We're really trying to find a way to win. It was a hockey game where we worked extremely hard, we played together, we played really tight to the opponent against a good Army hockey team. It was a good hockey game in general. Again, we're trying to find a way to win and breakthrough. It feels like we're very close. We need to continue with a lot of what we're doing, but we also need to add about one percent more. One percent more per guy and the results will come for us.

"We get a couple of penalties late in the second and early in the third. That drained some energy. Casey Jerry, who is a great penalty killer for us, is out of the game, so we needed some guys to step up. It felt like it was coming our way. We did a great job on the kill and then we started to push and then confusion and miscommunication in our zone allowed them to score the go-ahead goal. It still felt like we had some time to push. I was happy with that, but we were pretty drained from having to kill those penalties. It was a story where we didn't have enough at the end of the day. We'll push forward, evaluate and re-attack as we get ready for AIC on the road next weekend."
