Colgate Rolls Past Women's Basketball, 90-69

Game Recap
Five Colgate players recorded double-digit scoring numbers in its 90-69 win over Canisius in non-conference women's basketball action Wednesday night in the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Rachel Thompson led the way for the Raiders, scoring 24 points, going 11-for-16 from the floor. The guard also added a game-high seven assists. Tegan Graham tallied 16 points, while Alexa Brodie and Abby Schubiger recorded 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Raiders shot 54.5 percent on their field goal attempts and 45.5 percent from the perimeter. Colgate outscored the Golden Griffins in the paint (43-28), on second-chance opportunities (15-3) and off the bench (33-13). Colgate forced 21 turnovers, resulting in 31 points.

Junior Danielle Sanderlin and senior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks were the lone bright spots for the Griffs. Sanderlin finished with a career-high 20 points, while adding eight rebounds and three assists. Patterson-Ricks scored a team-best 22 points in the loss and dished out five assists for the second-straight game. Senior Anna Sweny scored seven points and generated two steals off the bench. As a team, Canisius outrebounded Colgate, 30-31, while shooting 45.8 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from 3-point range.

Canisius started the game on a 10-3 run before Colgate answered with an 8-0 run of its own to take an 11-10 lead with 2:49 left in the frame. The Griffs and Raiders would trade buckets in the final two minutes of the quarter, resulting in a 18-17 Colgate lead.

The Blue and Gold would keep it close in the first three minutes of play in the second, before Colgate's Brodie hit a 3-pointer to cap off a 10-2 run, giving the Raiders a nine-point lead with just over two minutes left in the half. Colgate wouldn't let the Griffs get any closer than seven points in the remainder of the half, taking a 40-31 advantage into the intermission.

Colgate would remain hot in the third quarter, shooting 75 percent from the floor and behind the arch to outscore Canisius 28-17 in the frame, building its lead to a hefty 20-point margin with 10 minutes to go. The Raiders lead would move to 86-60 with 2:36 left in the fourth and final quarter of play, however, from there the Griffs would trim the lead to a little as 19-points, 88-69, with 47 seconds remaining. Colgate then scored two at the charity stripe to determine the game's final.

Head coach Scott Hemer's Post Game Comments
"We lack consistency, until we can get consistent effort across the board for 40 minutes we are going to have a tough time winning games. I've said it before and unfortunately I am saying it again tonight, 21 turnovers and 15 second-chance points, that is why you lose the way you lose."

"Defensively you gave up 90 points, our transition defense, our boxing out is inconsistent and we go through stretches, those stretches kill us and we get down and we are not able to dig ourselves out. Until that changes we are going to have a tough time winning games."

Game Notes
• Wednesday marked the 37th meeting all-time between the two programs, with Colgate trimming Canisius' all-time lead in the series to 23-15.
• Sanderlin scored a career-high 20 points in the loss, surpassing her previous career-best of 18 points she set against Marist during her freshman season.
• Senior Tiana Pugh matched her career-high in rebounds with eight. The last time the Rome, N.Y., product recorded eight boards was against Youngstown State to open the season.
• Patterson-Ricks led the Golden Griffins in scoring for the third consecutive game. The senior also recorded her fourth career 20-point game.
• Canisius has allowed its opponents to shoot 33.3 percent or better from 3-point range in each of its first four games.
