Men’s Soccer Unable to Tame Broncs

Sylvain Coco tallied two goals and Clement Bourret notched the game winner to pace Rider in a 3-1 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Saturday at Ben Cohen Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Pablo Gatinois finished with six saves in goal for the Broncs (4-3-1, 1-0-1 MAAC). Sophomore defender Matt Spangler scored the lone goal for the Golden Griffins (1-8-0, 0-2-0 MAAC) while junior keeper Tom Crosbie recorded four saves.

Spangler staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when his shot from the middle of the box deflected off a Rider defender and into the lower left-hand corner of the goal for his first of the campaign.

Coco brought the Broncs level a little more than 11 minutes later, beating Crosbie with a shot to the lower right-hand side of the goal. Bourret and Juan Carlos Garcia Gomez were credited with assists on the play.

Bourret gave Rider a 2-1 lead at the 69:21 mark of the match, finishing off a cross from Pablo DeCastro for his fourth of the campaign. Aaron was credited with a secondary assist on Bourret's tally.

Coco closed out the scoring in the 81st minute when he headed home a cross from Bourret for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"Our youth continues to show up at crucial moments in games. Either missing easy scoring chances, switching off mentally or giving away silly fouls in dangerous areas. I know the potential we have and can see us grow every game."
