Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Tekie’s Tally Lifts Men’s Soccer Past Niagara

Freshman Jonny Tekie scored the lone goal of the game and junior Tom Crosbie posted his second career shutout to lead Canisius to a 1-0 victory over "Battle of the Bridge" rival Niagara in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Tekie's goal in the 40th minute proved to be the difference as the Golden Griffins (2-8-0, 1-2-0 MAAC) extended their unbeaten streak against their long-time rivals to six games with the one-goal triumph.  Crosbie picked up his first victory of the season in goal for the Griffs as he made one save.

Josh Savoni recorded four saves in goal for the Purple Eagles (4-7-0, 2-1-0 MAAC), who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

Tekie staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead just a few moments before halftime, blasting a free kick from nearly 25 yards out past Savoni and into the upper right-hand corner of the net for his first collegiate tally.

Niagara's best chances to get on the board came late in the second half as Matthew Krucko-Moeller and Dylan Avila both found the crossbar twice during a three-minute span. Krucko-Moeller's attempt came in the 78th minute when his free kick from just outside the box found the bar before Avila hit the pipe from inside the six-yard box in the 81st minute.

Sophomore Alessio Atzori also nearly doubled the Griffs' advantage in the 85th minute when he got behind the Niagara defense and connected with a free kick from freshman Julius Schoner, but Savoni was abled to get a piece of it and keep it out of the goal.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"I thought it was a fantastic atmosphere at the game tonight for a local rivalry contest. It was a very close game and could have gone either way. I was really pleased with the way our team defended and the way we managed the game in the second half to maintain our 1-0 lead."
