Iona's Second-Half Goal Downs Women's Soccer

Box Score A goal by Iona's Samantha Hogan in the game's 60th minute proved to be enough for the host Gaels, as Iona downed Canisius 1-0 Saturday afternoon in a MAAC women's soccer match in New Rochelle, N.Y.

The victory improved Iona to 5-11-2 overall and 3-5-1 in the MAAC, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 6-7-2 overall and 1-5-2 MAAC action.

After playing a scoreless first half, Hogan put the Gaels up 1-0 on her first collegiate goal, with assists being credited to teammates Kelsie Kearns and Kiera Haggerty. Canisius senior goalkeeper Alana Rossi made six saves in the loss for for the Blue and Gold while Angelina DeCicco recorded three stops to earn her first career shutout in goal for Iona.

Iona out-shot the Griffs 19-9, but Canisius ended the game with a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Head Coach Todd Clark's Postgame Comments
"I guess we might say that this match was the story of our 2019 season. We are better in so many ways, but early in games when we have the chance to take charge and we miss opportunities. We are playing hard and I have no doubt that our final match will be another strong effort and we hope that is rewarded in a win."

Game Notes
• Saturday's game marked the 32nd all-time meeting between the two schools, with Canisius leading the series 15-13-4.
• Margretta Dry, Madeline Beaulieu and Shauna Lee each were credited with two shots on goal for the Griffs.
• Eight of the 11 Canisius starters played all 90 minutes on Saturday.

Up Next
The Blue and Gold will close out the 2019 season at home on Wednesday, Oct. 30, as the team welcomes Marist to the Demske Sports Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
