Rowing Completes Head of the Niagara in Front of Home Fans

On a sunny and brisk Sunday at the West Side Rowing Club in Buffalo, N.Y., the Canisius rowing team continued to improve on a strong start to the 2019-20 season with five entries at the Head of the Niagara/Wright Regatta.

The Golden Griffins sent out a trio of varsity four boats in the morning before having their two varsity eight crews take the top spots in their afternoon race to cap off their lone home event of the fall.

In the Women's Collegiate 4+ event, the varsity four "A" boat for the Blue and Gold was edged out by Buffalo for first, as the Canisius crew's time of 15:40.34 was less than three-tenths of a second behind the Bulls. In fourth place at 16:08.22, the varsity four "B" group finished 10 seconds behind third-place SUNY Geneseo, while the Canisius "C" crew finished sixth with a 16:48.89 posting.

After a break for the Griffs, it was time for the varsity eight squads to take to the water. Out of four entries in the Women's Collegiate 8+ race, Canisius grabbed first and second over crews from Buffalo and Buffalo State. The first varsity eight rowed to a 12:24.031 final time and led the pack, while the second varsity eight was the runner-up by recording a time of 13:17.732.

"Today was a great learning opportunity for us. We learned how to race and rise up in the varsity fours and we took that into the afternoon racing. We're pleased with how the varsity eights raced. They took what we've been working on in practice and continue to apply it when in race mode. We're ready to hit practice again this week and prepare for some great competition in Pittsburgh on Saturday."

Up Next
The Golden Griffins will head next weekend to Pittsburgh, Pa., taking part in the Yinzer Cup on Oct. 19. Hosted by MAAC rival Robert Morris, the Griffs will face off against crews from the Colonials and Atlantic 10 school George Mason.
