Rowing Returns to Friendly Waters at Head of the Niagara

Event #2
Head of the Niagara
Date: Sunday, Oct. 13
Time: 8 a.m.
Location: West Side Rowing Club (Buffalo, N.Y.)

The Canisius rowing team will get back in the water this Sunday at their lone home event of the autumn, taking part in the Head of the Niagara Regatta at the West Side Rowing Club.

The regatta is scheduled for an 8 a.m. start, as the Golden Griffins are set to send out a trio of varsity four boats at 10:30 a.m., followed by the varsity eight and second varsity eight racing at 1:30 p.m.

Last Time Out
• The Griffs opened their 2019-20 season by sending out two varsity eight boats at the Mercyhurst Invitational on Findley Lake, N.Y.
• Despite the V4 session of the event being cancelled due to rough waters, the Golden Griffins' first varsity eight and second varsity eight crews were able to place second and third in the V8 session of the day, respectively.
• The five-kilometer portion of the V8 session saw the Canisius varsity eight finish in second and the second varsity eight come in third, while the two boats for the Blue and Gold swapped places in the 500-meter part of the session.
• Posting a final time of 30:33.92, Mercyhurst took home the top spot overall, while the Blue and Gold's first varsity eight placed second with a 32:43.92 time. The second varsity eight for Canisius clocked in a 34:56.29 final time, while Penn State rounded out the group at 35:08.30.

Regatta Notes
• The Head of the Niagara/Wright Regatta is an annual event in which the West Side Rowing Club hosts races for both the scholastic and collegiate levels.
• Canisius has been scheduled to participate in the Head of the Niagara every year since the 2014-15 campaign, suffering weather-related cancelations in 2015-16 and 2017-18.
• Last season, the Griffs swept the top three spots in the Women's Collegiate 4+ session, as the Canisius varsity four "A" boat led all entrants with a 13:33:26 time.
• Last year's event also saw the varsity eight edge out the second varsity eight in a head-to-head race, beating the second boat by a time of 1:03.53.

Up Next
