Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Bentley Doubles up Hockey, 4-2

Bentley used goals from four different players and a 32-save effort from Aidan Pelino to post a 4-2 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at KeyBank Rink at Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Tanner Jago and Jakov Novak tallied power-play goals while Jonathan Desbiens and Drew Callin pitched in even-strength tallies for the Falcons (9-11-3, 8-7-2 AHA), who extended their unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2) with the victory.

Junior Matt Hoover accounted for both Golden Griffins (9-13-2, 6-11-1 AHA) goals.

Following a scoreless first, Jago staked Bentley to 1-0 lead at the 6:47 mark of the second period, scoring with a slap shot from the top of the point during a 5-on-3 power play for his sixth of the campaign.

Hoover brought Canisius level just under five minutes later, collecting the puck deep in the Griffs zone and out-skating the Falcons defense before tucking the puck under the arm of Pelino on the break to knot the score at 1-1.

Novak put Bentley back in front with a man-advantage tally in the final minute of the middle stanza, knocking home a loose puck from the top of the crease to give the Falcons a 2-1 edge heading into the third.

Desbiens doubled the Bentley margin a little more than eight minutes into the final period, scoring on a breakaway to make it a 3-1 contest.

Hoover gave Canisius life late in regulation, beating Pelino from close range with the extra attacker to pull the Griffs within one, 3-2, with 1:32 to play.

That would be as close as Canisius would get, however, as Callin countered with an empty-net tally 20 seconds later to determine the final margin.

Pelino picked up his eighth win of the season for Bentley with his 32-save effort. Junior Blake Weyrick recorded 23 saves between the pipes for Canisius.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"It feels like things are stacked against us right now. We have a group that is trying to figure out how to play consistent hockey, how to play 5-on-5. When we do that, we're a good team. When we take penalties, especially undisciplined ones, it makes it extra challenging. But, we're going to battle. We'll evaluate, reattack and get better tomorrow.

"(after scoring our second goal) We get a chance with Dylan (McLaughlin) right in front of the net to tie it up, potentially and then Blake gets caught in a tough spot where we're trying to get him off and then all of a sudden, they shoot it from the corner and it goes in the net. It's a tough break. I liked our push after we went down by two, but that's not a recipe for any type of success to be playing down two goals late. We have to remedy that."
