Hockey Beaten by Bentley in Finale, 3-1

Jake Kauppila scored at the 11:48 mark of the third period to break a 1-1 tie and propel Bentley to a 3-1 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at KeyBank Rink at Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Luke Santerno and Jonathan Desbiens also scored for the Falcons (10-11-3, 9-7-2 AHA), who recorded a sweep of the host Golden Griffins (9-14-2, 6-12-1 AHA) and extended their unbeaten streak to seven games with the victory.

For the second night in a row, it would take more than 20 minutes either team to get on the scoreboard as junior Nick Hutchison staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead at the 7:52 mark of the middle frame with a power-play tally, burying a cross-ice feed from sophomore Austin Alger for his 11th of the campaign.

Santerno brought Bentley level less than five minutes later, placing a wrist shot past the blocker of Griffs goaltender Blake Weyrick to tie the game at 1-1.

The game remained tied until nearly the 12-minute mark of the third, when Will Schlagenhau took advantage of a turnover by Weyrick behind the Canisius net to gain possession before playing the puck to Kauppila, who deposited it into the vacated cage to give the Falcons a 2-1 advantage.

The score would remain the same until the final 15 seconds of regulation, when Desbiens recorded his second goal of the weekend with an empty-net tally to determine the final margin.

Aidan Pelino stopped 21-of-22 shots faced in goal for Bentley. Weyrick made 17 saves for Canisius.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"It was a good, hard hockey game. It was 1-1 in the third and our goalie trips and falls behind the net and gives them an empty-net goal that ended up being the game winner. It's a tough pill to swallow. We've got to continue to fight for our game. The challenge is to put January behind us and get ready for what's next in February.

"It was a different kind of game tonight. It was a hard hockey game for both sides. It was tight checking. There were not a lot of scoring chances for either team. You felt like one moment was going to be the difference and tonight it wasn't on our side. There are things we need to figure out and get better at. There are also some good things about tonight that we need to learn from. That's what we've been trying to do all year. We've haven't had a game like this in a while, so it's good to get that under our belt and move on and get better."
