Patterson-Ricks Leads Women's Basketball to Comeback Win Over Fairfield

Game Recap
In a game that saw the lead change hands a total of ten times, the Golden Griffins came out on top, 53-50, as junior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks made her third trey of the evening with 9.4 seconds left to defeat Fairfield Friday night.

The Griffs move to 6-10 on the season, and 4-1 in MAAC play while Fairfield drops to 3-13 and 0-5 in conference play.

Senior guard Maria Welch led the way for Canisius with a season-high 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arch. Patterson-Ricks finished with 13 points and senior Sara Hinriksdottir grabbed 14 rebounds and scored nine points in the win. As a team, the Blue and Gold went 18-of-49 from the field and 10-of-20 from 3-point range on the day. The Griffs' bench outscored the Stags 24-7 on the night, led by Welch's 17.

Fairfield was led by Casey Foley who collected 16 points on 6-of-19 shooting, including a 4-of-15 mark from the perimeter. Katie Armstrong had a near double-double, finishing with eight points and 10 boards. All in all, the Stags shot 31.3 percent from the field and 27.6 percent from 3-point land.

With Canisius down 15-12 entering the second quarter, Welch came off the bench and hit two 3-pointers to give the Griffs an 18-17 lead with 7:29 on the clock. However, Fairfield would answer with an 8-2 run over the next 4:26 for its biggest lead of the contest, 27-20. Welch continued her hot shooting in the second quarter, scoring a total of 11 points to draw Canisius within three at the break, 31-28.

In the third quarter, the Griffs and Stags were tied three times with Canisius only taking the lead twice, the first time on a Hinriksdottir layup with 1:54 left and the next on a pair of free throws from Welch just 33 seconds later. Fairfield's Sam Kramer gave the lead back to the Stags on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, 42-40.

With 5:32 left on the clock in the fourth and the score 48-43 in favor of Fairfield, Canisius started a 10-2 run with a running jumper by Patterson-Ricks. The run would be capped off by Patterson-Ricks' game-winner with 9.4 seconds left, in fact, the Fayetteville, N.Y., product scored eight of the Griffs final 10 points to finish off the comeback win.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comment
"I have to give the players credit because we really challenged them tonight, a lot of this season has been talking about learning how to win and for us to go on the road last weekend and get two road wins, that is a great accomplishment, but then it was about coming home and defending our turf. I have to give them credit because I saw the energy and pride in them on the bench, so it's not what I talked about at the timeout it is what they brought to the table for each other."
