Strong First Half Leads Women’s Basketball Past Saint Peter’s

Four Canisius players score double figures as the Blue and Gold use a 48-point first half to defeat Saint Peter's in Jersey City, N.J., 75-62. Junior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks scores a team-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a 3-of-4 mark from 3-point range.
 
Canisius improves to 5-10 overall and 3-1 in MAAC play, while Saint Peter's falls to 5-10 and 0-4 in the conference.
 
Junior Tiana Pugh scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench, while sophomore Danielle Sanderlin recorded a double-double with 12 points and ten boards and senior Sara Hinriksdottir added 14 points. Senior Maria Welch dished out a game-high seven assists. As a group, The Blue and Gold shot 50.9 percent from the floor on 28-of-55 shooting. From 3-point range, the Griffs shot 42.9 percent, going 4-for-16. Canisius out-rebounded the Peacocks 36-26.
 
Saint Peter's also had four players reach double-digit scoring figures, with Briyanah Richardson leading all scorers with 19 points. Wil'lisha Jackson tallied 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Zoe Pero and D'Aviyon Magazine each scored 10 points. Pero also recorded five blocks in the loss. As a team, the Peacocks hit on 39.7 percent of the of its field goal attempts and 29.4 percent of its 3-point field goal attempts.
 
The Golden Griffins got off to a quick start offensively, shooting 64.3 percent from the field in the first two quarters of play jumping out to a 48-29 lead. In the first quarter, Canisius had a 10-0 run to make the score 18-6, followed by a 9-3 run by Saint Peter's to trim the Griffs lead to 21-15 at the end of the stanza. In the second, Canisius put a 9-0 run together to make the score 37-19 with 4:03 left in the frame. In the final four minutes of play of the half, Canisius out-scored the Peacocks 11-10 to take a 19-point lead into the locker room.
 
In the third quarter of play, the Griffs lead was trimmed to 60-50 as the Peacocks opened the frame on a 15-4 outburst and outscored the Griffs 21-12 in the quarter. In the fourth, Saint Peter's would get as close as eight, 64-58 with 5:40 left on the clock. The Griffs would then go on a 6-0 run with back-to-back 3-pointers from Erika Joseph and Patterson-Ricks to make the score, 70-58. The Blue and Gold would stave off the Peacocks in the final three minutes to hold on to the win.
 
Canisius outscored Saint Peter's in in the paint (30-20), off turnovers (26-13), off the bench (24-7) and on fast break opportunities (4-2).
 
Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comment
"Overall I was very proud of the team. Anytime you go on the road and win two games, it is a success. We still have to keep learning in terms of what it takes to win consistently however. Saint Peter's really took it at us in the third quarter and it took us a while to respond."
 
Game Notes
• Saturday afternoon marked the 63rd meeting between Canisius and Saint Peter's. Canisius now holds a 33-30 advantage and has won 13 straight over the Peacocks.
• Canisius' 48-point first half was the most points scored in a quarter this season.
• Canisius is 3-1 in MAAC play for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
• Pugh grabbed a career-high seven rebounds, surpassing her previous high of six.
• Welch dished out seven assists for a new career-high and first five-plus assist game.
