Tough Defense Helps Women’s Basketball Defeat Iona

Game Recap
Canisius picked up its second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season, defeating Iona at the Hynes Center in New Rochelle, N.Y., 48-40. The Golden Griffins improve to 4-10 overall and 2-1 in the league, while Iona falls to 1-13 and 0-3 in conference play.

For the third straight game, junior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks led all scorers with 14 points, going 5-of-8 from the field and 2-of-4 from 3-point range. Senior Sara Hinriksdottir added 12 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Danielle Sanderlin and Anndea Zeigler both scored eight points. Off the bench, senior Maria Welch grabbed seven rebounds. As a group, the Blue and Gold shot 43.5 percent for the game, highlighted by a 55.6 percent fourth quarter. The Griffs outscored Iona in the paint 30-10.

Iona made just 25.0 percent of its field goal attempts, going 14-of-56 for the game. The Gaels were led by sophomore Tori Lesko who scored 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. The forward was also Iona's leading rebounder, grabbing eight caroms. Sophomore Monica Barefield accounted for half of Iona's 3-pointers, going 3-for-8 for a total of nine points.

Canisius found themselves in an early hole after Iona scored five of the game's first seven points. However, the Griffs wouldn't trail for long as they went on a 6-0 run to make the score 8-5. Iona closed the quarter on a 7-0 run, taking a 15-10 lead into the second stanza. The Griffs would come out hot in the second quarter, outscoring the Gaels 14-5 in the frame, behind an 8-0 to take a 24-10 lead into the break.

In the third quarter, the Griffs built its lead to 28-22, but Iona would claw back to tie it on a Barefield 3-pointer from the elbow, 30-30. Canisius retook the lead two possessions later and never looked back, building its margin to as much as 10 points, 36-44, after an 8-2 run to start the fourth frame. Canisius' lead wouldn't fall to any less than six points for the remainder of the game as they held on to win 48-40.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comment
"I thought it was great to see them respond in the fourth quarter on the road and do what it takes to get a win. With that said, we gave up a lot of points off turnovers and second-chance opportunities, and when you're defending that well in the half court you cannot give up easy points like that, especially on the road. Hopefully, we can take the positives from it and keep moving forward."
