Volleyball Ends Non-Conference Play with Two Losses

The Canisius volleyball team ended the Delta Hotel by Marriott Kalamazoo Conference Center Tournament on Saturday by dropping a match to tournament host Western Michigan, 3-0 (20-25, 19-25, 14-25), before falling to fellow Jesuit institution Loyola Chicago, 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 17-25, 26-28).

Match One Recap:

A fast start by Western Michigan ended up sinking the Golden Griffins in a three-set match on the Broncos' home court.

Despite the loss, the freshman duo of Camila Vazquez and Melina Woods continued to make a difference early in the season, as Vazquez tallied eight kills and Woods added six kills of her own.

The Griffs were able to strike for the first point of the match, but Western Michigan broke off a 6-0 run immediately after to help seal a 25-20 victory for the Broncos in the opening set. The Blue and Gold kept things close outside of a 5-0 Western Michigan run, but the Broncos won the second set, 25-19, to put the Griffs on the ropes. In the third and final set, the Griffs suffered the loss, 25-14, after giving up a late 7-1 run despite keeping the set close early.

Cassidy Ceriani was another central piece of the Blue and Gold's effort, recording a double-double with her 27 assists and 11 digs. In addition to a team-high three total blocks, Leah Simmons notched seven kills. Senior Sara Wesley and freshman Hannah Nelson both tallied six kills, with Nelson also digging six balls. Libero Sofia Lopez Acosta set the pace by leading the team with 14 digs and recorded both of the Griffs' service aces.

The Broncos were powered by Rachel Bontrager's 15 kills and Mary Murphy's 31 assists, while Kathleen Reilly led Western Michigan with 13 digs.

Match Two Recap:

Looking to rebound after the earlier loss to Western Michigan, Canisius started off well, winning the first set, before coming out on the losing end of the last three sets versus Loyola Chicago.

Vazquez showed off her ability to contribute as a freshman once again, pacing the Golden Griffins with 15 kills and ending the weekend by being named as the Canisius representative to the all-tournament team. Lopez Acosta also set a new career-high with 31 digs, capping off a great weekend for the senior libero with four assists as well.

The Golden Griffins opened the contest by matching runs early with the Ramblers, but a late 12-3 stretch capped off a 25-18 win to start the Griffs' afternoon. The second set did not go as well for the Blue and Gold, with Loyola Chicago and Canisius trading chances late into the set, but the Ramblers pulled away for a 25-21 victory. In the third set, the Griffs faltered late as Loyola Chicago went on a 10-4 run to finish the set and win, 25-17. The fourth and final set went down to the bitter end as Canisius came back to take a 25-24 lead before the Ramblers edged out the Griffs, 28-26, to put the match on ice.

For the Griffs, Ceriani helped with 45 assists, chipping in four kills on top of that. With 14 kills, Simmons again provided an offensive presence for the Blue and Gold, while fellow junior Carly Shifflet notched seven digs. Wesley also contributed on offense and defense, ending the match with eight kills and three total blocks. Vazquez was not the only freshman to make an impact against the Ramblers, as Woods tallied 10 kills and Nelson racked up six kills and a trio of service aces. Fellow rookie Ashley Kekeisen reached double-digits with 11 assists.

For Loyola Chicago, Quinn Spieker led the way with 11 kills, in part to Delilah Wolf's 42 assists. Alex Nunez also aided the Ramblers with 33 digs.

Quote from Coach Vazquez:

• "The Griffs put on their fighting gloves this afternoon. They were determined to get another win this weekend. We did fall short but we played some pretty impressive volleyball. Camila showed up in transition which helped our team win long rallies and Sofia's performance this weekend put her on the Libero leaderboard for in the conference."

Game Notes:

• The Griffs are now 2-7, with a record of 2-4 in neutral-site games.
• Vazquez totaled 35 kills and 11 total blocks in the three matches to earn the all-tournament nod.
• Ceriani now sits at 1,947 career assists, needing 40 more assists to tie Britanny Gerde for eighth in program history. Ceriani is also 53 assists from reaching the 2,000-assist milestone.
• Saturday was the first time Canisius faced either Western Michigan or Loyola Chicago in program history.
