Darnaby Shines in Volleyball’s Loss to Marist in MAAC Opener

In their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match of the season, the Canisius volleyball team opened the weekend with a loss to Marist, 3-1 (21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 19-25).

The match saw Gabrielle Darnaby register a double-double, posting a career-high 11 kills to lead Canisius and chipping in 12 digs as well.

The Golden Griffins started the match by not surrendering a lead to Marist until 17-16, yet Canisius was unable to regain the lead, falling 25-21.

In the second set, the Griffs found life late, using a 5-1 to take their first lead of the set, 22-21, but could not hold the lead, eventually dropping the set, 25-23. Looking to extend the match, the Blue and Gold came out hot, putting up a 3-0 scoring run to open up the match and, after a run-trading set, pulled away to win, 25-19. The fourth set started off with a 6-2 run by the Red Foxes, and Marist used a 4-0 stretch to close out the set, 25-19.

In addition to Darnaby and her .429 hitting percentage, the Blue and Gold were led by Cassidy Ceriani and her own double-double. Ceriani did it all with 29 assists, adding 11 digs, six kills, a service ace and one total block. The freshman duo of Camila Vazquez and Melina Woods once again provided secondary offensive output by notching eight kills apiece. Vazquez also led the Griffs with five total blocks, while Woods tallied two total blocks herself.

Leah Simmons and Sara Wesley also contributed by burying nine and six kills, respectively. Both Simmons and Wesley recorded two total blocks as well. Defensively, Sofia Lopez Acosta dug 19 balls to go with seven assists. Ashley Kekeisen served as a secondary option with nine assists and six digs. Also, junior Carly Shifflet and freshman Hannah Nelson both put up two kills.

The victorious Red Foxes were paced offensively by Nikki DeSerpa's 16 kills and Taylor van der Biezen's 25 assists. Defensively, Marist was led by Morgan Owens with 19 digs, while Chidera Udeh had five total blocks.

The loss moves the Golden Griffins to 2-8, while Marist improves to 4-7.
