Baseball Beats Liberty, 9-2

GAME RECAP
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Ryan Stekl collected two hits and drove in four runs as Canisius beat Liberty 9-2 Friday afternoon. The Blue and Gold got out to a five-run advantage and never looked back to knock off the Flames. The Golden Griffins push their record to 9-3, as Liberty falls to 8-6 on the season.
 
Canisius got the action started in the fourth inning as Stekl roped a double to center field, bringing around juniors Mark McKenna and Canice Ejoh, putting the Griffs up 2-0.
 
The Golden Griffins added to their lead in the next frame with two more runs as they scored on a bases loaded walk, a fielder's choice and a wild pitch to take the 5-0 advantage.
 
Liberty answered in the bottom of stanza with two runs of its own on a single and a double, to cut the Canisius lead to 5-2.
 
In the seventh, Stekl plated two more runs for the Griffs as he shot a single back up the middle to score McKenna and junior Joseph Preziuso.
 
A double to right center by redshirt junior John Novenche in the ninth to plate Stekl and senior Liam Wilson ended the scoring for the game and gave Canisius the 9-2 victory.
 
Junior Andrew Sipowicz picked up his second win of the season as he relieved fellow classmate Jared Kennedy, who got the start and lasted 4.2 innings allowing the two Liberty runs. Sipowicz went 3.0 innings, scattering three hits while striking out one.
 
GAME NOTES
• Canisius extended its road winning streak to 10-0, dating back to last season (6-0 this season).
• The Griffs have scored nine or more runs in seven of its first 11 games (including 10 plus runs three times) The Griffs scored nine or more runs in 11 of its 57 games in 2017 (including 10 plus runs eight times).
