Special Teams Lead Hockey Past Army West Point, 4-1

Sophomore Matt Hoover scored two power-play goals to pace Canisius in a 4-1 victory over Army West Point in Atlantic Hockey Conference action Friday at KeyBank Rink at HARBORCENTER.

Junior Ian Edmondson and freshman Matt Long also found the back of the net for the Golden Griffins (15-12-2, 15-8-0 AHC), who moved into sole possession of first place in the league standings with Friday's victory.

Conor Andrle accounted for the lone goal for the Black Knights (10-12-6, 8-9-6 AHC)

Edmondson opened the scoring at the 12:44 mark of the first period with a shorthanded goal, beating Army goaltender Cole Bruns with a wrist shot over the right shoulder during a 2-on-1 break for his first of the season.

Hoover doubled the Canisius margin to 2-0 less than four minutes later, cleaning up a loose puck in the slot while the Griffs were on the power play for his eighth of the campaign.

Andrle cut the Black Knights deficit in half during the final minute of the second period, beating Canisus sophomore netminder Daniel Urbani with a wrist shot from the top of the slot to make it a 2-1 contest.

Hoover restored the Griffs' two-goal cushion late in the third with his second power-play goal of the contest, redirecting a pass from junior Cameron Heath past Bruns with 5:03 remaining to make it 3-1.

Long closed out the scoring with an empty-net tally in the final minute of regulation.

Urbani stopped 27-of-28 shots faced in goal for Canisius. Bruns finished with 26 saves between the pipes for Army.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"Tonight was a huge win for our team. It was one of those odd games where there were a lot of penalties throughout the game. We had to really battle and claw for everything tonight. The power play got us a couple of goals; the penalty kill was unbelievable and (Daniel) Urbani was great in net for us. We put all of that together in a 4-1 win on a Friday night and it feels great.

"It's a next man up mentality anytime you have someone go down. Everybody has to step up when we have injuries on our top line. Those are big holes to fill, but I was very confident with the guys that filled in. We did a little bit by committee and had some guys playing together that have not spent much time together and they did great with that."
