Hockey Edged by Army West Point, 3-2

Michael Wilson tallied two power-play goals to lead Army West Point to a 3-2 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Conference action Saturday at KeyBank Rink at HARBORCENTER.

Wilson recorded his team-leading 16th and 17th goals of the season and Trevor Fidler chipped in a shorthanded tally to pace the Black Knights (11-12-6, 9-9-6 AHC) in the one-goal victory.

Freshman Matt Long and junior Felix Chamberland scored for the Golden Griffins (15-12-2, 15-8-0 AHC), who remained in first place in the league standings despite Saturday's setback.

Wilson staked Army to a 1-0 lead just 5:21 into the contest when he deflected a shot from senior Tyler Pham past Canisius goaltender Daniel Urbani from just off the right post while the Black Knights were on the power play.

FIdler doubled the Army margin to 2-0 a little more than five minutes later with a shorthanded tally, beating Urbani with a wrist shot high to the glove side for his fifth of the campaign.

Long cut the Canisius deficit in half at the 14:33 mark of the first period when he jammed home his own rebound past Army goaltender Cole Bruns for his fifth of the campaign.

Wilson restored the Black Knights' two-goal margin with his second power-play goal of the contest at the 5:05 mark of the second period.

Chamberland trimmed the Canisius deficit to one with his fourth of the campaign at the 13:12 mark of the second, beating Bruns to the glove side with a snap shot from the middle of the slot during a Griffs rush.

That would be as close as Canisius would get, however, as the Black Knights held the Griffs to just two shots during the third period.

Urbani recorded 27 saves for the Griffs. Bruns stopped 17 shots between the pipes for the Black Knights.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"It was a tough loss for us; the better team won tonight. Army had most of the play in the third period when I was hoping that our guys would find a way to push. It was a bit of special teams battle that we lost tonight. A couple of power-play goals for them and our power play couldn't get it done for us. All in all, it's a hard hockey game that we needed to be better in.

"It was back-and-forth early and then they get the first goal on a power play and then a second goal shorthanded that goes off the referee and creates a 2-on-1 that they made a nice play on. I really liked how when we made it 2-1, in moments of the second period, we were pushing for the equalizer. We just could not maintain that push for long enough."
