Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Topples Saint Peter’s, 52-49

Sara Hinriksdottir tallied a season-high 29 points and the Canisius women's basketball team outlasted Saint Peter's, 52-49, at the Koessler Athletic Center on Monday night. With the win the Golden Griffins improved to 8-15 and 6-6 in MAAC play, while the Peacocks dropped to 4-20 and 1-12 in conference action.

The Blue and Gold bested Saint Peter's in a defensive battle in the first half, as the Griffs held the Peacocks to just 20 points at the end of the first two quarters. That total is the second-lowest total they've limited an opponent to in the first half this season.

The Griffs kept the Peacocks at arms length for the majority of the third quarter but Saint Peter's mounted a comeback in the final stanza. The Peacocks poured in 20 points in the frame, and eventually took a lead with 4:20 left in the frame (42-40), but the Griffs battled back, finishing the fourth quarter on a 12-7 run to win the game 52-49.

Hinriksdottir matched a career-best 29 points in the outing, hitting 9-of-22 from the field, including a trio of three-pointers. Margret Halfdanardottir hovered around 10 points, tallying nine in the win.

Anna Sweny once again showed her tenacity in the paint, leading the team in rebounds with nine. Saliah Serrette tallied eight rebounds, while Hinriksdottir finished with seven.

Haley Dalonzo led the Saint Peter's attack with 12 points, while Zoe Pero recorded 10 in the loss.

Overall offense was hard to come by for both teams as the Peacocks shot just 29 percent while the Blue and Gold shot 31.

Canisius managed to outrebound Saint Peter's, 40-38, and for the third time this season Canisius forced over 20 opponent turnovers as the Peacocks tallied 22.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"Sara was obviously big for us," head coach Terry Zeh said. "She made a bunch of baskets. I thought Anna Sweny's defense was really good as well. Both Danielle Sanderlin and Saliah made some big game-winning rebounds down the stretch which helped tip the game back in our favor. Defensively we were really solid for most of the game."

GAME NOTES

• The Blue and Gold have tallied 11-straight victories against the Peacocks, the program's longest active winning streak against any team in the MAAC.
