WBB Completes Sweep of Niagara in Battle of the Bridge Finale

For the fourth season in a row the Canisius women's basketball team recorded a regular season sweep of its rival, Niagara, with a 72-66 win over the Purple Eagles in the Gallagher Center, Tuesday night. With the win the Golden Griffins improved to 10-18 overall and 8-9 in MAAC play while Niagara dropped to 11-17 overall and 8-9 in conference action.

Despite trailing, 32-20 at halftime the Blue and Gold took control in the second half, scoring 42 second-half points, en route to the 72-66 victory.

Canisius' offense was locked in for a majority of the game, as the team shot 47 percent from the field, and had four players reach double-figures for just the second time this season.

The Icelandic contingent was once again the wind in the Griffs' sails, combining for 38 points, as both Margret Halfdanardottir and Sara Hinriksdottir posted 19.

Danielle Sanderlin was strong in the paint, tallying 11 points, while Maria Welch returned from injury and tallied 10 points in an all-around effort. The Erie Pa., native also chipped in six rebounds and four assists.

Contender for MAAC Player of the Year, Victoria Rampado, was held to 16 points and just 5-of-14 from the field, as the Canisius defense made her work for every point.

Jai Moore paced the Purple Eagles with 20 points, going 8-of-16 fromf the field. Kaylee Stroemple (12 points) and Jamie Sherburne (11 points) also reached double-figures.

The Blue and Gold won the battle of the glass, taking down 36 boards as compared to Niagara's 32. Turnovers were an issue in the first half for Canisius, as the team gave it away 13 times but limited the giveaways to just seven in the second-frame, totaling 20 for the game.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"I thought it was another good game," head coach Terry Zeh said. "I thought it was better played than our first contest. We jumped out to a nice start, and they got back into it. I thought we were a little unsure against the pressure in the first half and then second half we did a better job. We got some layups and got really good shots in the second half against their zone. We didn't really have to get offensive rebounds because we were getting a lot of layups and made clutch free throws down the stretch."

GAME NOTES
• With the win Canisius improves to 59-35 all-time against Niagara
• The Blue and Gold have now won five-straight against the Purple Eagles and 10 of the last 11 games.
• Hinriksdottir is now a stone's throw away from 1,000 points, need just five points to reach the feat.
• The Griffs had four players reach double-digits for the second time this season, with the other time coming against St. Bonaventure in the second game of the season.
