Women’s Basketball Wraps Up Regular Season With Loss at Siena

Junior Sara Hinriksdottir scored 20 points and became the 23rd member of the Golden Griffins women's basketball program to score over 1,000 points, however the Golden Griffins fell in its regular season finale at Siena, 68-59 on Friday. With the loss Canisius dropped to 10-19 overall and 8-10 in conference action, while the Saints improved to 15-13 overall and 10-7 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.

It didn't take Hinriksdottir long in the contest to reach the plateau as she tallied five points in the first four minutes of the game to reach the milestone. Meanwhile the Blue and Gold appeared to have the upper hand on the Saints, taking a 17-16 lead to the first intermission.

However the Saints used a 15-8 run throughout the second quarter to take a lead it never lost, bringing a 31-25 lead into halftime.

Canisius kept chipping away at the Saints throughout the second half, however Danielle Sanderlin recorded a critical three-point play with 1:01 left in the frame to cut the Saints lead to just three, 62-59. Siena managed to close out the final minute with a 6-0 run to secure the victory.

Hinriksdottir's 20 points paced the team and she tallied six rebounds and two assists in the effort. Sanderlin was close behind, nearing a double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Saints had three players reach double-figures as Kollyns Scarborough tallied 17 points, while Maddie Sims and Deja Rawls, tallied 15 and 10 points respectively.

Siena edged the Griffs in the battle of the glass, 31-30, and forced 20 Canisius turnovers.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"We had too many first half turnovers that gave them easy baskets," head coach Terry Zeh said. "We were not sound with our defensive principles and allowed them to score the way they wanted. I was proud of the fight we showed cutting it one possession with a minute to go. However we were unable to get the key stop when we needed it."
