Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rider Defeats Women's Basketball on Senior Day, 62-54

The Canisius women's basketball offense covered a lot of ground in the final two quarters to cut what was a 20 point deficit, down to four points with five minutes remaining, but Rider was able to keep the Golden Griffins at arms length, as the Broncs defeated the Blue and Gold, 62-54 on Sunday. The loss spoiled what was the team's final home game and the squad's  annual senior day. The Griffs dropped to 9-18 overall and 7-9 in MAAC play, while Rider improved to 12-15 and 9-7 in conference action.

Out of the halftime break, the Broncs raced out to a 15-2 run to start the frame, giving Rider its largest lead of the game, up by 20.

However, slowly Canisius began to whittle away at the advantage, going on a 22-6 run, spanning just over 11 minutes between the third and fourth quarters. The run was capped by a Saliah Serrette trey which forced a Rider timeout.

Out of the break however, the Broncs buckled down and began gaining traction on the offensive end once again, finishing the final five minutes on a 15-11 run to secure the 62-54, victory.

All-told the Blue and Gold scored 23 points in the final frame but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback bid.

Canisius had three players in double-figures, as the Icelandic duo once again were strong for the Blue and Gold with Sara Hinirksdottir leading the way with 19, and Margret Halfdanardottir posting 17.

Serette came on strong in the second half becoming an integral part of the comeback, posting 10 points on her senior day.

For Rider, Stella Johnson was far and away the best player on the court, as she posted 25 points and 13 rebounds for the double-double. Kamila Hoskova also tallied double-figures with 14 points, while Lexi Posset recorded 13.

As a team the Broncs out-rebounded the Griffs 43-28, while the Griffs forced 10 Rider turnovers and only gave it away 10.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"I thought tactically we did a good job of what we were trying to do defensively," head coach Terry Zeh said. "We didn't win the toughness and hustle plays. They got a ton of offensive rebounds. We held them to 37 percent shooting and they got a boatload of offensive rebounds and it hurt us. They smashed us on the glass and we had a bunch of shots at the basket that you need to be strong to finish. You have got to finish those to win. We got the ball to where we wanted. Credit to them, they beat us in those categories."

GAME NOTES
• Canisius's advantage in the series history was cut to 32-13 with today's loss.
• With her 19 points, Hinriksdottir is just 24 away from the 1,000 point mark.
• The Blue and Gold honored four seniors for their accomplishments as Serrette, Halfdanardottir, Sarah Cooley and Abby Schwenk played their final home games as a member of the Blue and Gold.
