Morro Leads Baseball Past Milwaukee, 3-2

Canisius junior Conner Morro records three hits and three RBI, leading the Golden Griffins to a 3-2 victory over Milwaukee in the final game of the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The win closes out the opening weekend for the Blue and Gold, evening their record at 2-2 on the season.

The action didn't get started until the bottom of the third inning when Milwaukee sophomore Trevor Schwecke put a crooked number on the board with a two-run blast to left field to put the Panthers ahead 2-0.

Canisius responded right back with two tallies of its own in the top half of the fourth. After a base on balls to senior Christ Conley, his second of five walks on the morning, followed by another free pass to fellow senior Ryan Stekl, a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt by sophomore Stephen Bennett set the stage for Morro. The Cheltenham, Ontario native, stepped into the box and was the recipient of a gracious hop over Milwaukee's third baseman bringing Conley and Stekl in to score to even the ballgame at two apiece.

Morro struck again with two outs in the top of the eighth as he dropped in a single to left field plating Bennett, who had doubled earlier in the frame, putting the Griffs ahead for good at 3-2.

After donning the University of Buffalo blue for the past three seasons, senior Charlie Sobieraski got his first start on the mound for Canisius. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound right-hander peppered the strike zone all morning as he surrendered two runs on six hits, striking out two and allowing zero walks in seven strong innings of work.

Redshirt senior Michael Ginther, who saw his first action of the 2018 campaign, relieved Sobieraski to start the eighth, retiring all three batters he faced before handing the ball over to senior closer Tyler Smith.

Smith had little trouble shutting the door for the Griffs as he forced a ground out and pop up for the first two outs. After issuing a walk, he struck out the final batter looking for his second save in as many days.

• Conley's five walks is the most ever in a single game in program history breaking the record of four free passes achieved by six other Griffs, most recently by Anthony Massicci in 2014.
• Senior Liam Wilson went 1-for-5 today, dropping his batting average, which was .500 entering the game, but he's still hitting at a .412 clip (7-for-17).
• With his three hits today, Morro now leads the team with a .467 average (7-for-15).

Canisius returns home before heading to North Carolina next weekend for a three-game series with Western Carolina Feb. 23-Feb. 25. Game times are 4 p.m., 2 p.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
