Baseball Explodes for 24 Runs; Sweeps Doubleheader

DOUBLEHEADER RECAP

GAME ONE
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Canisius baseball pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of six Western Carolina errors to take game one, 15-4. Seniors Christ Conley and Ryan Stekl, along with junior Canice Ejoh, powered the Griffs line-up with three hits apiece as eight Golden Griffins were credited with a hit.

The Blue and Gold put up six innings of crooked numbers including three frames of multiple runs.

The scoring action began in the first inning as Conley singled through the right side to plate Ejoh. Stekl followed right after with a ground out to shortstop, scoring senior Liam Wilson from third.

In the second inning, Canisius was able to break the game wide open as junior Joseph Preziuso tripled to right center bringing around junior Mark McKenna. An Ejoh single that scored Preziusio, followed by a Wilson two-run home run, capped off the four-run stanza that saw the Griffs lead 6-0.

A Ejoh single in the third that plated McKenna, a sacrifice fly by junior Conner Morro with a tag-up by Conley, and a McKenna scamper home on a wild pitch, coupled with a two-run home run by Western Carolina's Matthew Koehler in the fifth, saw the Blue and Gold lead 9-2 after eight innings.

Canisius' offense was not quite done yet, as they posted six more runs on just two hits and three WCU errors in the top of the ninth to pick-up the victory.

Junior right-hander Andrew Sipowicz got his second start of 2018 and was able to even his record at 1-1. The 6-foot-2, 211-pounder was able to get through 5.1 innings while scattering five hits and allowing two runs before handing the ball off to fellow junior Nolan Hunt. Hunt went the rest of the way getting credit for the save for 3.2 innings of work, giving up two runs on two hits while striking out four.

GAME TWO
Senior southpaw J.P. Stevenson went the distance to pick-up the complete game shutout and his second win of the season leading the Golden Griffins to the 9-0 victory and the doubleheader sweep.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound lefty was masterful on the bump as he only faced three batters above the limit, surrendering two singles and fanning six batters.

Canisus' offensive assault continued in game two as Wilson hit his second two-run home run of the day to kick things off in the top of the first.

The second inning and third innings saw the Griffs manufacture three more runs on an Ejoh double to right center that plated sophomore Jake Burlingame, a double down the third base line by senior Gage Lanning scoring Ejoh and a ground out by freshman Jacob Martins pushed home sophomore Stephen Bennett giving the Blue and Gold the 5-0 advantage after three.

Senior Ryan Stekl crushed a ball over the right field wall in the fourth inning for a three-run home run, his first four-bagger of the 2018 campaign. The Griffs tacked on their ninth, and final tally, in the sixth inning when Burlingame reached first base on a fielder's choice, scoring Stekl on a WCU throwing error.

GAME NOTES
• Canisus' 15 runs in game one was its most in a game since its 16-5 win over Manhattan last season on May 13.
• The Griffs scored 10 or more runs in eight contests in 2017, finishing with a perfect 8-0 record in those games.
• The 24 runs are the most runs in a doubleheader for the Blue and Gold since scoring 30 runs in a doubleheader versus Niagara on May 14, 2015 (Wins of 14-4 and 16-4).
• The shutout in game two is the first of the season for Canisius, who recorded nine zero runs games in 2017 as a pitching staff.
• Stekl, who amassed six hits on the day, now moves into ninth place all-time in program history with 202 career hits, passing Jimmy Luppens '14 (202 hits). Stekl is also just the 10th Canisius player to tally 200 hits in a career.
