Baseball Splits Doubleheader; Earns First Win

DOUBLEHEADER RECAP

GAME ONE

Milwaukee junior Tyler Bordner cleared the bases with a double in the fifth inning, and the Panthers tacked on two more runs, as Canisius fell 8-3 in game one on Saturday of the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The loss drops the Golden Griffins to 0-2 on the season.

The visiting Panthers got the scoring started with two runs in the top of the first inning as senior Ben Chally singled to left field, driving in redshirt sophomore Mike Ferri. Chally then came around to score on a Bordner bloop single to left center.

The Blue and Gold answered in the bottom of the next frame as junior Conner Morro wristed a ball into center, plating senior Gage Lanning. Then in the third, redshirt senior Liam Wilson doubled to straight away centerfield followed by a single to almost the same spot by senior Ryan Stekl bringing Wilson in to even the score at two apiece.

Bordner's three-run double in the fifth inning put UWM up 5-2, spelling the end for Griffs right-hander Andrew Kneussle. Kneussle finished the afternoon allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking one in 4.1 innings of work. Sophomore Kyle Warner came in and got Canisius out of the jam, working 2.2 innings.

Freshmen Omar Ward and Zach Chivers each saw their first collegiate action on the mound, throwing one inning apiece.

The Blue and Gold tallied a run in the bottom of the stanza on a sacrifice fly by junior William Krull scoring Stekl, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

Milwaukee added a run each in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, respectively, to get the 8-3 victory.

GAME TWO
Seniors John Conti, Liam Wilson, and junior Conner Morro each recorded two hits apiece helping Canisius notch its first win of the 2018 campaign in game two on Saturday of the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The win moves the Golden Griffins to 1-2 on the season.

Ohio State got on the board with a two-run home run from senior Noah McGowan, his second blast against the Griffs in as many days.

Canisius started its comeback in the bottom of the inning, as Wilson doubled to left center to bring around junior Canice Ejoh, who walked to lead off the half inning. A Conti single in the next frame that plated sophomore Stephen Bennett knotted the game at two.

The Buckeyes attached a run in the top of third, but the Blue and Gold added two runs in the bottom of the same inning to take the 4-3 advantage. Singles by Bennett and junior Joseph Preziuso, scoring Wilson and senior Christ Conley, respectively, gave the Griffs the lead for good.

A Morro triple in the fifth inning scoring Bennett, and an Ohio State manufactured run in the top of the sixth, ended the scoring for the contest at 5-4.

Senior southpaw, J.P. Stevenson, Canisius' wins leader from last season with nine, battled through some early hiccups to earn his first win of the season. The New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island native, went five innings, surrendering three runs on three hits, while fanning eight and allowing four free passes.

Sophomore Carson Perkins relieved Stevenson for the next three innings, scattering three hits and giving up a single run before handing the ball to senior Tyler Smith for the ninth.

Smith, who recorded 11 saves last year as the Griffs' closer, picked up his first save of 2018. After walking the lead-off batter, Smith induced a ground out, followed by a strikeout before getting the last out via fly ball to center field.
