Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Hoops Sweeps Season Series with Monmouth

The Canisius women's basketball team won the final regular-season meeting against Monmouth on Friday, downing the Hawks, 62-50, at the Koessler Athletic Center. With the win the Blue and Gold completed the season-sweep of Monmouth and improved to 9-17 and 7-8 in conference action, while Monmouth dropped to 8-18 and 6-9 in MAAC play.

The Golden Griffin offense was the most efficient its been all-season, finishing the game hitting 48 percent of its shots (26-of-54). Meanwhile a 20-point third quarter helped distance the Blue and Gold from the Hawks after a closely-contested first half.

The Griffs took a 31-22 lead into halftime but used a 16-6 run a little over halfway through the third quarter to get its biggest lead in the game, opening up a 20-point advantage.

Monmouth mounted a comeback in fourth, outscoring the Griffs 14-11 in the stanza but it wasn't enough, as Canisius held on for the 62-50 win.

The Icelandic duo of Margret Halfdanardottir and Sara Hinriksdottir combined for 46 of the team's 62 points, as they each scored 23. Halfdanardottir tallied a new-career high, besting the 19 she scored against Niagara in 2016.

Hinriksdottir nearly secured another double-double, coming up one rebound short, tallying nine to lead the team.

Anndea Zeigler tallied nine points to add secondary scoring, and Oliva Vernon dished out five assists.

For the Hawks, scoring was spread around, as no player tallied double-digits. Alexa Middleton and Adriana Zelaya both tallied seven points each to pace the team.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"I thought Sara was amazing in the middle of their zone. We got that zone spaced and cutting and moving and just got the looks that we wanted to get in there."

"Don't let (Kayla) Shaw get the rhythm three. The kid can really shoot the basketball and don't let her get those and we didn't let her get any rhythm threes. They like to duck their post players in so we were trying to not let that happen and not let (Spooner-Knight) get to the basket. She had 25 in the last game and it was all off the bounce and we wanted to keep her in front."

GAME NOTES
• Canisius now leads the all-time series against Monmouth with a 6-5 record  in 11 games.
• Halfdanardottir set a new career-high with 23 points.
• Hinriksdottir continues to hone in on 1,000 points as she now boasts 957, with at least four games left in the 2017-18 season.
• The 48 percent the team shot from the field is a season-high.
