Ohio State Bests Baseball to Open 2018 Season

GAME RECAP
PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. –
Ohio State senior Noah McGowan launched a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, as the designated home team Buckeyes picked up the 6-4 victory over Canisius Friday afternoon in the Snowbird Classic. The loss marked the first game of the 2018 season for the Golden Griffins.

The Blue and Gold opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Canisius loaded the bases with two outs. Senior Gage Lanning drew a walk, forcing in junior Mark McKenna who had received a base on balls to lead off the game. Sophomore Jake Burlingame followed up the Lanning free pass with a single to left center, bringing around redshirt senior Liam Wilson to score the Griffs second run. Senior Ryan Stekl was thrown out at the plate to end the inning trying to score from second base on the play.

Ohio State answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the frame on a single by McGowan and a bases loaded walk to redshirt junior Nate Romans scoring sophomore Dominic Canzone and junior Kobie Foppe, respectively.

In the bottom of the second, Buckeyes junior Brady Cherry doubled to left center to score Foppe, followed by McGowan's three-run blast, resulted in four runs in the stanza and a 6-2 Ohio State lead after two full innings.

The Griffs would chip away in the top half of the next frame as Burlingame drew a bases loaded free pass, plating Wilson. Senior Joe Preziuso singled to left center, scoring senior Christ Conley, making the score 6-4 after three innings.

That would be the end of the scoring for the contest as junior right-hander Ryan Feltner went five innings for Ohio State, scattering six hits, while allowing four runs while striking out six and walking three.

Junior Andrew Sipowicz got the opening nod for the Griffs, only lasting two innings. The righty allowed six runs on seven hits, walking three and fanning one before being chased. Fellow junior Jared Kennedy would enter in the third and go five innings, striking out four and walking a pair before yielding to sophomore Will Frank for the last frame.
