Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Marist Outlasts Women's Basketball, 58-47

The Canisius women's basketball team came up short against Marist on Sunday, falling to the Red Foxes, 58-47 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.. With the loss Golden Griffins dropped to 8-17 overall and 6-8 in MAAC play, while Marist improved to 16-10 overall and 12-2 in the conference.

The Blue and Gold kept things close in the firs half, as Sara Hinriksdottir launched a buzzer-beater trey, well beyond the arc as the buzzer hit zero in the second quarter, to close the gap to just two, 22-20, Marist.

However at the start the second half the Red Foxes opened up on a 5-0 run, forcing a Canisius timeout and Marist never looked back, outscoring the Griffs 22-15 through the quarter, en route to its 58-47 victory.

Freshman Danielle Sanderlin had her strongest game to date, recording her first career double-double, scoring a season-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Hinriksdottir also reached double-figures scoring 13 in the contest, going 5-of-18 from the field including three 3-pointers.

The Marist offense scored by committee, as four different players hit 10-or-more points. Rebekah Hand tallied 15 points in the victory, while Maura Fitzpatrick, Grace Vander Weide and Alana Gilmer all scored 11.

Other than a discrepancy in shooting percentage, the stats were close, as Marist had a slight advantage in rebounds 34-32, and Canisius gave it away two more times than the Red Foxes (12-10).

Shooting efficiency proved to be the difference as Marist converted on 40 percent of its shots while Canisius shot 30 percent from the field.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"We did a lot of things we wanted to do," head coach Terry Zeh said. "We played great defense for the most part, except for a few mistakes. We did a really good job with our attention to the game plan. I thought we got some good shots, we just need a few more to fall. I'm very proud of the way we are competing and playing without a few of our players. Danielle really stepped up and played great for us."

GAME NOTES
• With the win Marist now leads 36-14 all-time in the series history.
• Sanderlin recorded her first career double-double with a career-best 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Anna Sweny set a new season-high in steals with four against the Red Foxes.
