Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Posts 2-2 Tie at No. 14 Union

Canisius used goals from sophomore Austin Alger and senior Jimmy Mazza and a 42-save effort from junior goaltender Blake Weyrick to post a 2-2 tie against No. 14 Union in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y.

Starting a stretch of four straight games against nationally-ranked competition, the Golden Griffins moved to 6-8-2 on the season with the draw.

Sebastian Vidmar and Brandon Estes tallied power-play goals for the Dutchmen (8-4-4), who out-shot Canisius by a 44-26 margin for the contest.

Alger staked the Griffs to a 1-0 lead at the 9:10 mark of the first period, beating Union keeper Darion Hanson over his left shoulder with a wrist shot from the middle of the slot for his sixth of the campaign.

Vidmar brought Union level with less than four minutes to play in the opening frame, wiring a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Weyrick from the top of the slot.

Mazza restored Canisius' lead with 3:32 to play in the second period, blasting a slap shot from the top of the point that deflected off the right post and into the back of the net to give the Griffs a 2-1 advantage.

Estes tied the game at 2-2 with a power-play goal just past the midway point of the third when his slap shot from the right point deflected off a Canisius defender into the cage.

Canisius had the best chance in overtime as senior Dylan McLaughlin had a close-range chance with 30 seconds remaining in the extra session, but Hanson turned the attempt aside to keep the game tied.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"I felt Union was really good early on tonight. They took us by surprise a little bit, but our first goal got us back into it. After that, I thought it was a good, hard hockey game for the first 40 minutes.

"Obviously, a team as good as Union, when they're down one heading into the third at home, they're going to make a push. They did that and we were trying to weather the storm. We were trying to assert ourselves in the game; we were trying to be the aggressor. That's hard to do against a team that is down a goal, especially a team as good as Union.

"It's what our guys want. They want to play against high-quality opponents. Union is definitely that. The fact that we can go on the road and have a good performance against an extremely-good team, it is at times satisfying, but at the same time you're up a goal in the third period. If we play better, maybe make some plays, we could have come out with a win.
"Our team has been transitioning into a harder hockey team. Early on, we had a lot of goals against and a lot of goals for. It was a bit of a shootout. I like the fact that we can have a 2-2 game against a great opponent on the road. That builds confidence for a team to be able to play such a hard hockey game. We're not satisfied with the result. But, all-in-all, I was really happy with the attitude and effort. That was tremendous tonight across our bench. "
