Hockey Tripped up by Dutchmen in FInale

No. 14 Union used goals from five different players to defeat Canisius, 5-3, in collegiate men's hockey action Saturday at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y.

Sebastian Vidmar, Ryan Walker, Michael Ryan, Zachary Emelifeonwu and Brendon Taylor all found the back of the net for the Dutchmen (9-4-4).

Sophomore Austin Alger tallied two goals and freshman Mitchell Martan accounted for the other marker for the Golden Griffins (6-9-2).

Trailing 4-1 at the start of the third, Canisius scored twice in a 2:40 span early in the frame to make it a one-goal game.

Alger began the sequence just 68 seconds in, jamming home a loose puck for his second of the contest to trim the Griffs' deficit to 4-2.

Martin made it a 4-3 game less than three minutes later when he put home a rebound on a shot from sophomore Grant Meyer for his third of the campaign.

That score would hold until the final minute of regulation, when Taylor scored into an empty net to determine the final margin.

Earlier in the contest, Alger gave Canisius a 1-0 lead just 5:33 into the contest, beating Union keeper Jake Kupsky with a wrist shot to the blocker side for his seventh goal of the season.

Vidmar responded with a shorthanded tally at the 12:15 mark of the opening frame, finishing off his breakaway opportunity to knot the score at 1-1.

Walker gave Union a 2-1 lead just under three minutes later when his wrist shot from the right sidewall found its way through traffic and into the net.

Ryan stretched the Union advantage to 3-1 with a power-play tally early in the second period as his wrist shot from the top of the point found its way into the upper left-hand corner of the net.

Emelifeonwu made it a 4-1 contest with 2:17 to play in the middle period, redirecting a centering feed from Brendan Taylor for his first of the campaign, setting up the Griffs comeback bid in the third.

Making his collegiate debut, freshman Matt Ladd recorded 32 saves between the pipes for Canisius. Kupsky finished with 15 saves for Union.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"In the third period, I thought our compete was closer to what our standards are. Whenever a team is down, it is a little easier for them to fight back. I was happy with how we played in the third, but I was disappointed in the effort in the first two periods. That made us have to have a sense of urgency and it's not a good recipe for winning against anybody.

"I was happy with his (Matt Ladd) performance tonight. We're not necessarily focused on the result. I'm sure he would want the second goal back, but for his first game in college hockey, I was very happy with how he played. He's a calm presence back there. He's got a bright future for us in net.

"Things we talk about are our attitude and our effort. It's the only things we can control. Our team is together. We believe in each other. I didn't see anybody hanging their head after the second period. We are an extremely positive, competitive team. It makes me very proud that whether or not the result is what we want to that point, I knew that we would come out and play the way we want to play in the third. They took it to us in the second period. We didn't hang our heads, we went out there and played our game and I'm very proud of our attitude and effort in the third."
