Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Hoops Extends Win Streak With 60-48 Win Over Monmouth

Canisius women's basketball fought off a slow start and extended its win streak to three games thanks to a 60-48 win over Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J., Saturday afternoon. With the win Canisius improved to 6-14 and 4-4 in the MAAC while Monmouth dropped to 4-14 and 2-4 in MAAC play.

The Hawks opened the first quarter on a 12-5 run but the Blue and Gold buckled down with 5:30 left in the frame to post a 14-1 run of its own, to end the frame with a 19-13 lead.

A strong third quarter helped seal the game as the Griffs outscored the Hawks 20-12, as the team went on to the 60-48 victory.

Sara Hinriksdottir posted her second-straight 20-point game, pouring in 22 points and tallying seven rebounds. Tiana Pugh also reached double-figures scoring 12 and Margret Halfdanardottir recorded 10 in the victory.

Rhaiah Spooner-Knight led the Monmouth attack with 12 points, while Kayla Shaw tallied 10. Despite the duos performance the Monmouth offense struggled mightily, hitting just 27 percent from the field (15-of-54) and 19 percent from long range (4-of-21).

The Blue and Gold won the battle of the glass, taking down 49 as compared to the Hawks 42, while Monmouth turned it over 18 times and the Griffs gave it away 16.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"I thought there was a couple of stretches both in the first half and again in the second half that we got loose around the perimeter and knocked down some shots," head coach Terry Zeh said. "Sara can do so much for us and score a lot of ways. She can make threes and score around the basket but I think everyone did a great job today. We didn't let them score inside, and they didn't get inside until late. We also controlled the defensive glass which was key. They had just seven offensive boards until the the end of the game.

"We are just trying to get better every game. We're going to play the best team in the league next week, give it our best shot, be courageous, and see what happens."

GAME NOTES
• Canisius evened the all-time series against the Hawks with the win, as the series is now at 5-5.
• Hinriksdottir hit 20-or-more points for the second-straight game.
• Pugh scored double-figures for the fourth time this season and third time in four games.
• Canisius' defense held Monmouth to just 27 percent which is the lowest oppoentn shooting percentage this season.
